TIP: Block mobile data with our ‘Data Blocker’ config

Money tight right now? maybe this will help

Money tight right now? maybe this will help

So you’ve installed the carrier bundle, you’ve had a play and realised you have used a ton of data on your iPhone. You now wait for the bill and pray it’s not going to be *that* bad.
If that sounds familiar and you’d like to be able to disable data (mobile data that is, not wi-fi) then you’ll want to download our ‘Data Blocker’ config file. Full details can be found by hitting the image below.

NOTE: This has only been tested on 3G and 3GS running 3.0 or higher
Note: You must also set Emails, Calendars and Contacts to ‘manual check’
This is not guaranteed to stop all data and you may still get charged

Thanks for the hint on Cydia, Dan.

I used Cydia to download and install SBSettings. You run this by swiping the status bar at the top. Then use the big EDGE button at the top to toggle EDGE on and off. I toggled it off (red).

I’d uninstalled the profile downloaded from this web site, so went to Cellular Network Data Settings and deleted all the characters in the APN. A reboot or two and this finally seems to have turned off mobile data … for my iPhone 2G unlocked/jailbroken running 3.0 on Vodafone NZ prepay.

Turning mobile data back on seems as simple as using SBSettings to toggle EDGE back on (green) and then doing a reset on Cellular Network Data Settings. But there is an element of hit or miss.

Hope this may help others in the same boat.

tehoro that was the ONLY reliable way I could block data on my 2G iPhone because (stupidly) Vodafone decided that it would accept ANY APN setting and let you use data, when previously you could change it to anything but the correct setting and it would block data. Go figure (more revenue).

Dan – instead of using the above, can I change the XT APN from internet.telecom.co.nz to something like “qinternet.telecom.co.nz” and have my data blocked? And then delete that “q” when I want data again? Or will that not work?

Thanks Dan. Useful info. Of course your “image” to click shortcut is handy and easier than doing it manually. And easy to undo.

I need this badly. Tried it on my 2G iPhone, jailbroken/unlocked, 3.0, on Vodafone prepay.

Blocks web access via Safari but still uses data for Mail. Am I doing something wrong?

This has only been tested on 3G and 3GS running 3.0 or higher. Sorry I will update the post.

Unfortunately I am not sure if this works on 2G iPhones, whether they are jailbroken/unlocked or not. I am sure there would be a Cydia App that you could download to disable data though??

Yes that does work for Telecom (on 3GS)
