Kiwi music tracks that make awesome ringtones and how to create them

How many phones you know ring like this? Not many, if any. How many phones you know got the skills to… erm, ring? (Sorry, Scribe). Cheesey opener aside, if there’s one thing we can all agree on, it’s that kiwi music ROCKS and there’s nothing better than loading up your iPhone ringtone library with some great tunes from Godzone. But how do you get them there and which tracks make the best ringtones?

I’ve managed to amass a few songs in my library that I reckon make fantastic ringtones, and I switch them around quite often depending on how I feel. Generally, you’ll want to use something that is not so quiet or mellow that it will blend into the noise of traffic when you’re outside, and something with a repetitive beat or hook if you want one that loops nicely.

The one I’m currently using is Everything by P Money – its looped beat lends itself perfectly to a ringtone, and it usually brings knowing and appreciative smiles to the faces of those around me when it rings! Brother by Smashproof is another easily looped track that works well. Also in my list is My Delirium by Ladyhawke, Baby Come On by Elemeno P (although a certain Telco kind of overdid that one for me…) and Wake Up Brother by Goldenhorse.

iTunes features a built-in ringtone creator which easily converts tracks to ringtones, all you need to do is right-click your chosen track and select ‘Create Ringtone’. However, this method only works for tracks that you have purchased from the iTunes Music Store and even then it doesn’t always want to allow it.

So how else can you convert your favourite track to an iPhone compatible ringtone? The easiest way I’ve found is using the website Audiko. Using this website you simply upload your music file, choose the segment of the track you want to use and choose whether to fade in or out, then it will download as a ringtone file which iTunes will add to your library. The next time you sync, hey presto! There it is in your Sound settings. Remember, if you can do this through iTunes do so as you’ll be supporting local music by way of the small fee you’ll have to pay.

This feature should not be abused, however – absolutely no ‘Agadoo’ or ‘Birdie Song’, please!

What tracks do you inflict on an unsuspecting public when you receive a call? Share your suggestions in the comments!

Its called “Don’t Stop the Rock” by Freestyle. Cadbury did have it as a ringtone download on their website. I converted to ringtone format for the iPhone. I can have it available for download if anyone wants it?

Is it possible to change the SMS tones? The few that are offered are not really my cup of tea. I have managed to add some custom ringtones, but really would like to add more for the txts.
    Thank you.
    :)

@knottsav – I’m not aware of any ability to add new SMS tones which is a pity as I’m with you on that one – the only one that I like is Glass. It’s great that Apple have added ringtones to the iPhone iTunes Store as of OS 3.1 though.

Steve, thanks for your reply. Yes it is a shame..on such an expensive and media rich phone. I was hoping there was a way of doing so (without the dreaded jailbreaking -which is for the birds) as I txt a lot…but need something attention grabbing to make sure I dont miss them. I will have to settle for the somewhat jovial 'horn' then.

I have Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy from The Nutcracker Suite. Used to be Cadbury's music for their fruit and nut bar in the UK many years ago.
