OS 3.0 and the great Caller ID debacle

But you sound so familiar?

But you sound so familiar?

Since the 3.0 update, a bug has hit the iPhone which causes Caller ID issues for all New Zealand carriers. The issue is that some events such as text messages send the number to your iPhone in the international +64 2xxxxxxxx format, but other events such as calls send the numbers to your iPhone in the national 02xxxxxxxxx format. Most phones will see these as the same number, but since 3.0 not the iPhone.

The result is that if you have your numbers saved in the international format, incoming calls will not marry up with your saved contact and display the number only, not the name. On the flipside, if you save your numbers in the national format, incoming texts will display the number only and not the name.

The only workaround at this stage is to save the number in both formats, but this is a real mess and causes other complications in itself, like having to manually choose which of the “two” numbers you want to send a text to, and if you pick the “wrong” one the reply will come back in a separate thread in the messaging app.

According to a dicussion in the forums over at vodafone.co.nz, Vodafone have lodged this as an issue with Apple and should be fixed in a future firmware update. However, what kind of priority Apple will place on a bug that presumably only affects New Zealand is open to debate.

For now, I personally am tailoring my contacts list depending on whether I am more likely to receive a call or a text from specific people – i.e. if I am more likely to receive a text I will save the number in the international format and vice-versa.

If this has been annoying you, too, the best thing you can do to help make sure it gets fixed soon is send Apple feedback via this form.

UPDATE: We have confirmed that this is still not fixed as of 3.1 beta 2.

Nope, I am on XT and have the same issues. Reading through the discussion on the Voda forum people have seen the same thing happen with calls and texts from 021 numbers too. So it seems it’s all NZ numbers and all carriers.

  2. hmaddocks says:

Why is it only an NZ problem?

That is somewhat of an assumption, but I have not seen any similar complaints from iPhone users in other countries. Could be wrong. If it was happening in somewhere like the US / UK I’m sure it would have been all over Engadget / Gizmodo / TUAW

If you’re keen you can jailbreak and install the CallerID and Format Fix through Cydia, http://bit.ly/FuvyP. I had this problem with my iPhone on XT and installed the above and don’t have the issue anymore.

I have this problem when I receive texts from my family in the states. I’ve entered their contacts as 1########## and when I get their texts it just comes through as 1########## so it doesn’t automatically associate it with their existing contact.

Oops that first number should have had a plus on it as in +1##########.

I thought it was generally for us on VF network calls from 027 were a problem??

I only seem to have this issue with calls from the excessively long pre-paid numbers eg 021xxxxxxxx. Is it NZ that only uses the longer format?

I store all numbers in phone as +6421xxxxxx and it is only the ones with 8 numbers after the +6421 prefix that do not show caller id. The other numbers correctly use the callers name picture and ring tone, and show the name in messages

Hey just a question to anyone about this. If you have added contacts in your iphone with the international number i.e +642******* and call them using that number I take it you will get billed at international rates?

No, you get charged at your standard rates.
