Tethering meet Brick Wall....Brick Wall meet Tethering
Ok so I have spent a fair amount of time trying to get tethering back up and running for OS 3.1 and over, using XT or 2Degrees. The trouble is, after every turn I am hitting brick walls. So my question to you the reader is how important is it to you?
If it is something that everyone wants then I will continue my efforts, however if most people (which I suspect is the case especially with the costs of mobile data here in NZ) are not that worried then I will leave it up to the bigger international Devs to figure out.
Let us know by voting in the poll below and if you want to leave us a comment feel free. We’d like to hear from everyone on XT or 2degrees so that we have the most accurate picture – so even if you’re not bothered about tethering please vote.
How important is tethering to you?
- Updated to 3.1 and WANT/NEED tethering back (49%, 168 Votes)
- Not worried about tethering (29%, 98 Votes)
- Staying on 3.0 for now as I NEED tethering (22%, 76 Votes)

Hi. In the forums ‘Mak’ suggests he has Tethering working on 3.1 using the PwnageTool. Has anyone looked into this?

Thanks!

I would be interested to know more about the Brick walls and your journey so far?

This one is a MAJOR issue (for me) (yep I have voted)
Enuf for me to consider a jailbreak solution (a pity since I have a legit unlocked phone).

@chriscoxon – Yes we have and it is related to jailbreaking. We are talking about a non-jailbreaking method.
It’s a major diappointment for me, having asking telecom specifically before leaving Voda if tethering would still work. Don’t expect you guys to solve it for me though. This is a great site. Keep up the good work!

Hi! Just clarifying that I only have the OPTION for tethering available, the computer will not link the device as a gateway, jailbroken or not
.
However, there is an alternative tethering application for jailbroken phones.

Jason – it wasn’t a Telecom decision (nor anything they could realistically expect). It also has nothing to do with voda.
It’s an apple decision, they only allow tethering on networks that specifically approve it AND the network is an approved iphone network..
In this case XT allows tethering, but they are not an approved network.

Jason – agree 100%

@Richard – Appreciate both points, and I’m not blaming Telecom. It’s still disappointing to lose functionality you’ve come to rely on.

@stuartm – Jailbreaking doesn’t fix it — you have to download an application called ‘Modem’ from the Modmyi repository. This doesn’t use the conventional tethering and uses a different method.

I'm having to stay on 3.0 until XT tethering is sorted out. And I'm also a bit annoyed at Telecom who assured me that the iPhone would work seamlessly on XT – I even questioned the tethering aspect. Sure, they weren't to know that a firmware upgrade would break tethering, but they shouldn't tell customers that the iPhone will definitely work if they aren't 100% sure. Only Vodafone, who are an officially supported carrier, can say that everything is guaranteed to work.

So is there no way to enable tethering with 3.1 or newer with XT? I was tempted to try the Blackra1n jailbreak but that doesn't seem to fix tethering with non-supported carriers. Anyone tried that?

In addition, I would recommend the latest version of Pwnagetool (http://blog.iphone-dev.org) as opposed to Blackra1n.

edit: I meant tethering solution ofcourse : )

@Mak – I agree mak. Would only trust the devteam to jailbreak my phone. Btw there is more then one jailbreak solution on the jailbreak side. PDA net works really well. But not as seemless as the apple option.

I don’t know how but tethering works for XT and 2Degrees and i have legit 3.1.2 haha i’m special

Tethering is worth about $30/month savings in a second data plan to me. Not to mention the convenience of not having to use XT’s crappy modem software. I’ll likely jailbreak my phone rather than lose the tether. I can already see 3.1 only software I want to use appearing (Dropbox).
So to people who are using PDANet – can it route a WiFi connection to multiple devices?

@rawrman4429 – Have you actually tried to use it? At first you will see the option there but if you turn it on and try to use it, it will not work and the option will actually disappear from the menu for good.

Watched this interesting piece on the internet. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k6FsAKHFJZ0&feature=rec-HM-fresh+div
Didn’t have NZ as a option anyway.

@rawrman4429 – Rawrman – are you serious? Anyone else confirm this?
