Tethering meet Brick Wall....Brick Wall meet Tethering
Ok so I have spent a fair amount of time trying to get tethering back up and running for OS 3.1 and over, using XT or 2Degrees. The trouble is, after every turn I am hitting brick walls. So my question to you the reader is how important is it to you?
If it is something that everyone wants then I will continue my efforts, however if most people (which I suspect is the case especially with the costs of mobile data here in NZ) are not that worried then I will leave it up to the bigger international Devs to figure out.
Let us know by voting in the poll below and if you want to leave us a comment feel free. We’d like to hear from everyone on XT or 2degrees so that we have the most accurate picture – so even if you’re not bothered about tethering please vote.
How important is tethering to you?

- Not worried about tethering (29%, 98 Votes)
- Staying on 3.0 for now as I NEED tethering (22%, 76 Votes)

Hey.
Musclenerd from the devteam just released some info on 3.1.2 tethering. check it out here http://wikee.iphwn.org/howto:random
This is rather technical and wouldn’t recommend playing around with this unless you know what you’re doing. However this could mean that a more simple solution is on it’s way.

I jailbreaked my phone just to allow me to re-enable tethering, and I followed the instructions in the following post to get it all working: http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=804979
The instructions are based on the link that @shmac posted above, but are much easier to follow if you have a Mac.
So I’m running 3.12 with the iPhone Dev Team jailbreak, and have tethering working with XT!

I am really p'd off about this – I travel a lot and wanted to get rid of multiple devices so I got the iPhone and moved it to Telecom. I didn't read about the upgrade taking away tethering and now I am stymied – have had to retain a Voda account for mobile broadband to still use the phone costing me $40 per mth! If someone can help me (safely) get some form of tethering working would really appreciate it.
BTW – does anyone have their iPhone connected via bluetooth or do you get the same message re no driver for bluetooth peripheral device?

It’s quite important to me as I would like to have a backup internet connection in case I am out of the house or my internet connection is down. I really don’t understand why Apple NZ is promoting “Buy it from Apple and choose your carrier” and if we chose other than Vodafone then we will lose out the tethering function, if they want us to pick our own carriers they should give us an iPhone with no restrictions.

@rawrman4429 – and you haven’t jailbroken? Ever?

Tethering would only be cool if we had generous reasonably priced mobile internet data plans… at the moment, I’m happy to use the internet on my iPhone locally just casually to ckech email on the go and play a casual turn based game, like Chess and Words with friends.

It seems that a few hacks are beginning to show up to tether 3.1.2 on jailbroken phones and also benm.at is suggesting that a fix for non jailbroken phones may be imminent.
Are you still looking at trying to get tethering working, Dan – do you have any insight into the solutions above?

I can’t comment on the jailbreak solution, I haven’t tried it and I don’t intend to. We have been looking at ways of doing it without having to jailbreak as:
a:iPhonewzealand don’t support jailbreaking so we can’t offer a jailbroken solution
and
b:a lot of users don’t want to have to jailbreak.
As for Benm.at, unfortunately he hasn’t posted any details (which is fair enough) so I don’t know what he is trying. I have tried contacting him to no avail.
If you are jailbroken then this is pretty much a non-issue, if not then unfortunately it is still a waiting game.
@steve Nope Legit as out of the box

@MattD – it’s impossible to say. Every time Apple create a new firmware they start manufacturing phones with the latest firmware built-in. So it depends how long ago the phones they currently have in stock were manufactured.

A group overseas is taking legal action against Apple’s unlawful locking of tethering at the moment. I shouldn’t say it will be long until XT and all other unofficial carriers can use tethering again.

Can anyone confirm what version of OS is installed on a new purchased iPhone 3GS from Vodafone (is it 3.0 or 3.1??)
A colleague wants to get iPhone but XT and tethering are important to them and hence need for an iPhone with OS 3.0
