Review: Incipio Feather Slim Case

Naked no more

Naked no more

So I’ve been going ‘naked’ for a while now but thought it was time to get a case. After looking around for a while I decided to go for the Incipio Feather Slim Case. But how does it perform? well read on to find out more (full size images in the gallery)…

The case comes in many colours, although I could only get it in black or white, and as I had a white iPhone I thought it would look best with that. after getting the case I actually changed to a black iPhone so as I liked the white one I went and stumped up for a black one to complement the black iPhone.

It's Black, it's white

It's Black, it's white

The case is made of an “ultra light, ultra strong” polymer material and fits the iPhone extremely well. Strangely I find the  black case fits the iphone a lot tighter than the white but I think this is because of the fact the 16GB is actually slightly smaller than the 32GB. Google yields no results to say this but when I tested the White 16GB iPhone in the black case it wasn’t as tight as the Black 32GB iPhone [in the black case].

Either way the case fits very well, sometimes it actually feels like you might do some damage (either to the iphone or case) when removing it but as yet there have been no issues. To put the iPhone into the case you are best to slide it in, top right corner first so that it doesn’t catch on the mute switch and volume controls, and then it just pops/clips into place. To remove the iPhone you have to lift it out from the bottom edge, I would suggest bottom right edge as it makes it easier, and you will need to use a bit of force to pull it out.

I had hoped it would be slightly easier to remove as I still want to use my iPhone docks and Vent mount Holder. Unfortunately due to the snug fit I no longer use my docks, but when I am in the car I do still remove it from the case and use the vent mount.

The case itself protects the entire black/white casing on the back and most of the silver bezel with just the flat edge of the bezel and the bottom section (near the dock connector) showing.

It has cut outs for the mute switch and volume controls, the on/off button and the headphone jack. The bottom is left open so that you can easily connect the dock connector and so as not  to block the  speaker/mic. It also (obviously) has a cutout for the camera in the back. I must say that the cutouts are nice and accurate but if there is one issue I would say they make for pressing the buttons a bit more tricky (not enough to worry most people though).

They come at a cost of $40.00 and for your money they come with two screen protectors and a cleaning cloth, although as I have said many times before, I don’t use the screen protectors on my 3GS due to the “fingerprint-resistant oleophobic coating” Apple have applied to the screen.

erm no screen protector here thank you very much..

As it is a Polymer and not silicone it doesn’t have the rubbery feel that some cases have and therefore doesn’t ‘stick’ to the inside of your pocket when pulling it in and out. This was one of the biggest selling points for me as although a lot of cases didn’t add extra bulk they always felt like they did due to the fact they were kind of sticky.

There is one big issue I have with the white case. I used the white case for maybe 2 weeks at most and unfortunately even in that short space of time it has discoloured around the edges where it has been in my jean pocket. In the picture below you can see the join mark in the mould and it is around here and also around the entire top edge that it has gone an off white. This isn’t good enough by anyone’s standards and I will be taking it back. If you were to decide to get one (unless you don’t mind the discolouration I would stay well clear of white. A white iPhone doesn’t look too bad in the black case  so I would go for that or a different brand altogether.

Black and white combined

The Black case doesn’t have this issue but I have noticed some of the matte finish peeling away around the top edges. It reveals a shinier finish underneath. This is only very slight and not that noticeable, and to be honest it would only get annoying if a LOT more of it peeled away. But it is something to bear in mind when buying these cases.

Overall…..A great case that doesn’t ruin the aesthetics of your iPhone. I barely even notice I have the case on there now. There are unfortunately a couple of flaws but if you can handle those then this case is well worth the $40 price tag.

Nice review of a great case.

Any chance of doing a review of the NZ made ikonic edge or the Sena Ultra Slim, for the leather pouch lovers? cheers

Wow, what a crap case to review, or maybe I’m a rough user not really into polymer cases. Yeah I have a Y2K Nokia phone before because of my droppings it was now dead.
Originally I wanted this case so badly, http://store.apple.com/nz/product/TS506ZM/A?fnode=MTY1NDA0NA&mco=Nzk2NDI5NQ, but I managed to found its meaner brother.

And I’m quite satisfied with the case, although I’m really curious what Otterbox can really offer compared to this case. I dropped my iPhone one time for testing, and I don’t think the belt holder and holding the iPhone is not so sure when running. Overally 4/5 for this case unless I can try OtterBox.

@MX28080 – The case isn’t “crap” it depends on what you want to use it for. You need a rugged touch case that, by the sounds of it, is going to take some hard knocks. This case protects from wear and tear, scratches and small bumps/knocks, whilst keeping the general look and feel of the device. I wouldn’t recommend throwing your iPhone out of a building or against a wall (Youtube Vid) with this case, but if I dropped it I’d by happier knowing I had this to cover it.

@MX28080 – I just wrote a quick summary on the iphone 3GS Otterbox Defender case in the forums:
