I too have purchased this and I also have a Navman. Given the Navman to the wife, as its so convenient just to put your Iphone in the car mount and off you go. Plus you unplug it anyway when you get out of the car and take it with you, whereas you just hide the Navman somewhere in the car! Got a car charger from Trademe for $11 and the mount from hands-free NZ for $79. Awesome.

i'm a user of sygic, i used to have a tomtom one but sold that to my brother to cover the cost of the sygic maps.

First up, yeap, good system. As you'd expect it's maybe half a notch down from that of a dedicated in car GPS, but this is clearly offset by the convenience of having the GPS in your mobile. I purchased a fantastic goose neck cradle and in car charger for $32 on trademe. I find there are occasional bugs that can be overlooked, however my main frustrations are with the POIs. I find that compared to TomTom, they are far less comprehensive. Trying to route a trip to see the warriors via the Stadium option showed no mount smart, or Eriksson Stadium. Again, this can be overlooked, however my searching via POI is now done in conjunction with Find!NZ.

I'll be making a comment to Sygic to see if they will be imporiving their POI information.

7/10 from me.

Great review. I'm on the verge of buying this app but decided to wait a little bit more to see some competitive play in the field.

I will too be waiting for the Tom Top application.
kIt is going to come with a mount and external antenna.
I think an external antenna is going to be a better option in the car say travelling in cities with lots high rise buildings

Great review Steve. The clean layout of this site plus the honest, intelligently written reviews keep me coming back. The product seems pretty good but since I'll need to get a charging car mount anyways I may hold off for what TomTom is going to offer. I guess it'll be a race to see which comes first TomTom's release or my next big road trip, I may end up buying the Sygic app just because of timing.

Apparently Navigon have a free trial version of their Australian software but it doesn't look like they've come out with a New Zealand version yet. http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa...

It'd be nice to get some competition going on these apps to increase quality and push down price.

If you're going to drive from Auckland to Wellington I would definitely recommend that you use a car charger as using Location Services is certainly a drain on battery life (see my article "TIP: Boost your battery life - turn off location services") plus this app obviously keeps the screen switched on the whole time. If you power it in your car you will have no concerns about it dying on you, plus your phone will be all juiced up and ready to take calls etc when you reach your destination.

Looks like an awesome app. Does anyone know roughly how fast your battery is used when using this application? Is it so great that if I was driving from Auckland to Wellington I would need a car charger also?

I believe it was around 240MB which I thought was pretty reasonable and just a fraction of the capacity of the iPhone.

That price is quite resonable given that a Navman can leave you out of pocket $400+ and is another gadget to ensure you dont leave in your car so the theieves dont get it. I would love to see some indicative pricing & application file sizes from Tom Tom. What size is this particular app?
