XT Faster in More Dunedin Places for iPhone 3G
User Ahmad has been helping out a bit round here so when he contacted us to let us know he was going to be doing some speed tests around Dunedin we were looking forward to the results.
He has put a post on his blog over at buttonmasher.co.nz, detailing his day and the speed tests he ran. Hit up the link after the break to see the results from his day.
“Telecom XT has made bold claims about their new mobile network being “faster in more places”, which has apparently been independently verified. I was interested to know how good performance in Dunedin was, as this is where I live, and I had heard of a lot of problems with Vodafone 3G coverage in Dunedin. As an example, a friend once told me that he could make a video call from one corner of his house, but loses 3G coverage anywhere else in his house. Coverage has probably improved since then, but having acquired an iPhone 3G after a long time using an original iPhone, I decided to test speeds around various locations in Dunedin City for comparison.” Continue Reading…..

Excellent article, Ahmad. Thanks!

I am being hauled over the coals (probably as expected) over these “meaningless” results.
“XT network is not under the same load as Vodafone”
“Of course the iPhone works better on XT due to the no support for 900Mhz 3G”
I repeat – I am simply an end user, not an engineer.
We are all (I presume) iPhone users here. How does an iPhone user choose a network? Is it based on which network has the *potential* to be faster? Or is it based on which network is *actually* faster?
And do we choose based on which is faster *now*? Or do we pick a slower network *today* because of some belief that it will actually outperform the faster network at some unspecified time in the future?
Come on, I know that there are geeks involved in these discussion but some common sense needs to come into it!

Ahmad I totally agree with you and for the record we won’t put up with any soap-boxing or grandstanding from people who don’t get the concept that these tests are a “snapshot”. We’re nipping this argument in the bud right now.

“B-but…ours goes faster when no-one else is using it at the same time as you!”

To those geeks I would answer this:
If vodafone's network is under so much "load" then they are making alot more money and can afford/should be upgrading their network to cope with said "load"
If a road gets backlogged with traffic everyday the government builds another lane, they don't just say get over it, thats how it is. (most of the time)
