New plans

Telecom have changed the mobile data options available to users, slashing the number of options available to users beyond the 240MB plan.

Telecom has two ‘tiers’ of mobile data plans. The first set of lower-usage plans are classed as ‘data extras‘ and are marketed as add-ons alongside voice plans for mobile phones. They are: the casual rate, 20MB, 120MB and 240MB plans and they remain unchanged from the line-up announced at the launch of the XT network.

The second, higher-usage group of plans are marketed as ‘Mobile Broadband‘ plans and they are targeted at users of purely data devices such as Telecom’s T-Stick USB device, but can also be used for mobile phones such as the iPhone. Still with me? Good. It is this tier that has changed today. Previously this tier included 500MB, 1GB, 2GB and 3GB plans, however these are all discontinued (for new users) as of today.

As of today, 500MB is now only an option for prepaid customers and is priced at $29.95 per month. If you go over the limit, a further 500MB is available for another $29.95, then anything beyond that is priced at 10c per MB.

For postpaid users, the number of options are cut to just two: 2GB or 4GB. The 2GB plan is priced at $59.95 (or $49.95 for users who have residential or business broadband with Telecom). If the 2GB allocation is exceeded, a further 2GB is priced at $29.95 and then anything beyond that is priced at 10c per MB.

The 4GB plan is $79.95 per month (or $69.95 for Telecom broadband customers) with an additional 4GB available for $29.95 extra, and then 10c per MB beyond that.

Ouch, that’s pretty stink. Well I’ll have to see if Vodafone makes any announcements come the 1st of November as to if users can use an add-on for tethering data.

Man, I wish 2degrees would get in on the post-paid voice and data market.

Oh, Vodafone has extended it’s 3gb/1000pxt offer for another month which will keep me with them for now: http://twitter.com/vodafoneNZ/status/5191209885 it’s too bad that Telecom is choosing to not really compete for those of use who tether. I guess we’ll have to see what the addon that the Vodafone twit feed keeps talking about will be.

On an unrelated note, why still no visual voicemail on Vodafone?
