Hmmmmm where's my tethering option?

Hmm where's my tethering option?

The release of iPhone OS 3.1 beta 2 has seen tethering via the IPCC workaround no longer working for XT and soon to be 2Degrees customers.Previously in OS 3.0 a workaround allowed you to create a custom carrier bundle to enable tethering, as well as MMS amongst other things, if you were on a non-official carrier i.e XT or 2 Degrees but as of 3.1 beta 2, this no longer works.

Apple have closed the loophole (probably due to AT&T jumping up and down) and at this stage we are unsure of how to open it again. I am sure there will be a way of doing it. There have been some reports saying that if your .ipcc version number is higher than that of the .ipsw then it will be re-enabled. I did a quick test earlier today and this has not worked, however I need to wait until later to ensure all the necessary changes were made.

At this stage all other features work when using the custom carrier bundle so you can continue to use it for everything else. If you absolutely need tethering, when OS 3.1 becomes available DO NOT update to it if you are using a carrier that does not support it.

We will update this post as and when we get more info

Crickey, this is a bit of a disaster for me. I chose iPhone on XT because (a) I can’t get Vodafone at home office and (b) I could get rid of my mobile broadband t-stick. No-tethering = a big fail for me.

Is this something Telecom can fix? Or is it an iPhone determined issue?

Also, when is 3.1 due out?

This isn’t something that Telecom can get involved with I’m afraid — the existing carrier bundle has been put together by us and Telecom had nothing to do with it. They can’t get involved or issue carrier bundles unless they are an official iPhone carrier with a formalised agreement to re-sell with Apple.

There will no doubt be a way around it but just bear in mind that iPhone updates are never mandatory – iTunes will never force you to update to the latest software so the best advice I can give is to stay on 3.0 until tethering on 3.1 is fixed.

Word is that 3.1 will come out of beta and go live in September so there’s plenty of time yet.

    Hi Guys,
I’m quite new to this site, do apologies if this is has been pointed out before. I want to go from Vodafone to XT. The only thing that’s holding me back is the tethering. I came across this site ( http://www.volkspost.info/ipcc_fw3/ ) that helps in developing custom carrier bundles. From what I can understand its saying it can make custom carrier bundles with tethering enabled for iPhone OS 3.1.2 as long as its jail broken (I personally don’t want to jail break) or factory un-locked. Form what I understand Vodafone sell the phone factory un-locked. I was wonder if you guys can check it out and see if it’s possible? I would do this myself but I don’t have all setting that the site is asking for! Thanks

  5. Hi bud,
At this stage no tethering is available on 3.1 or greater firmware unless you are with an official carrier (Vodafone in NZ) or have jailbroken.
