Hi. I dont have 3.1b2 with me, however I read that if you set the version of the ipcc higher than the version thats in the firmware/ipsw then your custom settings take precendence.

Anyone with 3.1b2 willing to try this out?

Hi, can I put these settings onto my phone MANUALLY if I want to? If so, is there a list of the settings somewhere?

Also, how do I get back to Vodafone settings if I have to do that with my iPhone?

Finally – you talk about this update possibly affecting roaming – is that a permanent problem or is it possible that later updates would fix this issue?

    <<  |  <  |  >  |  >>  |  Reply  |  Quote
  13. Dan says:

The only things you can manually add are MMS and Data.

The Voicemail button, Xt Logos, Tethering ad a few other bits all need to be done through the carrier bundle.

Personally I recommend you add the settings through the carrier bundle. If you don’t want to have the XT Logo then the second option of just the text XT can be used.

We are working on confirming roaming in all countries. It is my belief that it works, but Telecom have asked me to advise people that it may not. Once it is tested in Europe, if it works, we will remove the warnings. If it doesn’t we will continue to work on a fix for it.

If you want to go back to the Voda settings you just need to swicth your phone off, put your SIM card in and switch back on. All the settings for all official carriers are already stored on the device.

  14. ahmad says:

Cheers Dan, I’m currently halfway through reading TWENTY THREE pages of the Geekzone thread (!!).

Is there any “harm” that this update could cause?

And could you please confirm – IF this update “breaks” roaming (which isn’t important to me currently), then are you saying that a future update could fix it? ie. the damage is not permanent?

Finally – so basically installing this lets me “SIM hop” between XT and VF sims just by a simple power cycle?

    Cheers.

    <<  |  <  |  >  |  >>  |  Reply  |  Quote
  15. Dan says:

This will do no harm to your device. I repeat NO HARM

Yes a future update to the bundle could fix the roaming issue (if there is one). But as I say, I don’t think there is an issue. I am 99% sure roaming will work.

It doesn’t cause ‘damage’ and if you ever wanted to remove the bundle, just because you decided you didn’t want it anymore, then you could just do a restore of your iPhone and it will be gone.

It does more than let you just SIM hop, you can do that without the bundle. This adds extras, like the MMS settings, Data Settings, Tethering Settings, XT Logo, Shortcuts to *123/*333/Your Telecom, activates the voicemail button to dial voicemail (without it the button does nothing).

    Thanks Dan :)

One final question before I go to bed. As a new Telecom customer (well soon to be), I don’t know how “Tworld” works. The website says that this is WAP based.

Does it work on the iPhone/does this update set the WAP settings?

    <<  |  <  |  >  |  >>  |  Reply  |  Quote
  17. ahmad says:

Oh and I forgot to add. I’m running 3.0 with jailbreak (PwnageTool) because I wanted to be able to turn data on/off using SBSettings.

Am I good to go with the update or do I need to be aware of anything if I am jailbroken (iPhone 3G).

    Thanks.

    <<  |  <  |  >  |  >>  |  Reply  |  Quote
  18. Dan says:

Only certain parts of Tworld can be accessed on the iPhone. Once you have added the bundle, under Settings–>Phone there is an option for ‘Telecom Services’ and under that you will see an option for ‘Your Telecom 3G’. If you press that it will take you to the your account part of TWorld, ask you to login (with your mobile # and a password you will set when you first go in to it) and will show you your Data, Text and call usage. You can navigate to some other areas whilst there but not much. apparently Telecom are working on enabling more of TWorld through the iPhone.

The iPhone doesn’t do WAP, it does full web browsing. hence why only some parts of TWorld work.

NOTE: This is only available when you are on 3G and doesn’t work over Wi-Fi.

The update works fine with jailbroken devices, but please note: we offer no support for and do not endorse jailbreaking on this site

For some reason Shift+Check for update doesn’t always work on Vista, some people report success and others are having issues. I think this is an isolated issue to a few users.

There are reports that these two fixes *may* work:

1.Right clicking iTunes.exe, clicking on the compatibility tab and checking the “compatibility enabled” tick box allows you to ‘Shift+Check for update’, however yesterday, when I tried this, it just refused to start iTunes.

    or

    2. Run iTunes as administrator.
    - That means right click ur itunes program icon and press the option ‘run as administrator’
    - Typically speaking the option doesn’t appear for shortcuts so open up ur itunes program folder:
Computer > Local Disk C > Program Files > Itunes
Then right click on the file thats named ‘Itunes.exe’; then click ‘run as administrator’
wait for it to load and go through all the notifications, sometimes it says theme has been changed and vista home premium or business etc. looks like vista basic. Don’t worry, now use the shift + restore option.
This will only work once, and then you will have to close iTunes and reopen as administrator

Any other fix?…..Unfortunately at this stage you will need to find someone with either a Mac or XP/Win7 and use their machine.

I have managed this on Vista without having to either of the processes above so as I say it is isolated to a few cases. If anyone else knows the answer please let us know.

@kocama – You can use your iPhone without this bundle on XT and yes it will work anywhere. This bundle just adds some extras. The warning about roaming is only there for caution, but we are pretty sure it is fine and it is more to do with data roaming. We are just waiting on confirmation from the UK that all works fine and then the warnings will be removed.

@nz.craig – You could go to telecom and ask them to reset the mms settings on your sim card. This is what I did and then mms worked fine, sending and receiving.

    <<  |  <  |  >  |  >>  |  Reply  |  Quote
  48. Dan says:

@nz.craig – Both SMS and MMS support text messaging. If Show Subject Field is enabled in Settings > Messages > MMS > Show Subject Field, you can only send messages after you have typed content in the Body field. Until then, the Send button will be grayed out, and you will be unable to send the message. If you add text to the Subject and Body field you will automatically send via MMS. If you wish to send via SMS, not MMS, either type text in the Body field only, or disable the Show Subject Field option. The following illustrates this relationship:

Subject Field only – Will not send
    Body Field only – SMS
Subject Field and Body Field – MMS

Can you check the “Show subject field” setting is switched to off and try again

OK same thing with being unable to MMS however I seem to have the solution.
I went to telecom and the very helpful lady there didn’t know about resetting the SIM card, however she adjusted my setting (were the same as nz.craig has listed above), to the following.

    Settings>> General >> Network >> Cellular Data

    APN: internet.telecom.co.nz
    Username blank
    password blank

    MMS
    APN: internet.telecom.co.nz
    Username blank
    password blank
    MMSC http://lsmmsc.xtra.co.nz
    MMS Proxy 210.55.11.73.8080
    MMS message size 614499

How she described it is it seems she only had to put in the internet.telecom.co.nz bit and the rest loaded automatically. At least this way you have all the settings. Have now confirmed this works to vodafone and telecom phones.

    Enjoy

I had purchased my iPhone directly from the Apple website. In order to get it to work I found this forum and downloaded the carrier bundle and got everything to work except for the “Tworld” feature. I have tried the Telecom store and they them-self along with the help desk were hopeless. But I managed to find the below forum on GeekZone and tried it and it works perfectly fine. So go ahead and try it.

NOTE: This will only work when your iPhone is connected to the Telecom 3G network and NOT via WiFi. This is a FREE service that is provided on Telecom branded handsets.
But for non-branded phones I am told it will eat in to your data plan.

It also creates a link to Your Telecom via settings –> phone –> Telecom NZ Services.

Under “Version” you will see “update”. While holding down the shift key click update and the magic box will appear. try that. C.

When the box pops up (at the bottom) there is a drop down menu which give you two options. Change it to the other option (it shows you this on the PDF instructions). Then hit browse and go to where you extracted the XT bundle carrier files. Go into this this folder until you come across the file that you need. There are only a couple of folders to look in so it takes 5 seconds.

  65. @Stacey – Hi Stacey, are you on Vista or XP? If you are running Vista you will need to use a PC with XP installed. For some reason Vista doesn’t like this and therefore you can’t change the option to ipcc file type in the pop up box. If you do what you have done from XP it will work. If you are using XP then it may be that iTunes is still running?? if so then you need to make sure iTunes is fully closed down before running the .bat file

  67. @cabbage – You can install the bundles on any version, however anything over firmware 3.0 and you will lose the ability to use tethering.

Every thing seems to be working well except I don’t seem to be able to activate MSM messaging , I have looked in the settings on the phone but don’t seem to be able to activate msm messaging. Any Idea on how to activate MSM.

Fist off I’d just like to say love the site.

I have installed the carrier bundle on my iphone with no problems and straight away noticed the updated taskbar logo I then tried the voicemail button with success there also.

Since getting my iphone I have been unable to send or receive mms messages. MMS is turned on in my settings but when I try send a photo a red exclamation mark comes up that says “Your message was not sent. Tap “Try Again” to send this message”.

I have tried adjusting the settings as suggested by eviltori but still had no success.

Go to: Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset Network Settings.

The phone will turn off (go black, Apple logo) and turn back on. NOW, reboot the phone (hold down sleep/wake and home until you get the slider to power off). Start up by holding down the sleep/wake button for a few seconds.

If that doesn’t work, you could restore your phone (to the latest firmware). It might work, no guarantees.

If you have another XT sim available or you could obtain (friend, family etc), try using that to send one. That would isolate whether it’s the phone or Telecom.

  79. No new carrier bundle needed, this one works with 3.1.2. A couple of questions:

    1. Are you using Vista? If yes then see this comment

    2. If not have you followed the instructions in the PDF?

I earlier had installed the TELECOM carrier bundle on my iphone via my PC and all worked brilliant (Except tethering) on 3.1.2. I then decided to upgrade my PC to with the NEW iMac and was having problems trying to get my iPhone to sync it. So i had to do a hard reset as per the advice from the Apple care. So i re-installed the TELECOM carrier bundle on the iPhone via the imac and it works just as well. Most of the people here are installing the carrier bundle via a PC on their iphone. So for those that have own the iMac and the iPhone, i thought i might as well give my 2 cents.

@bottler – if you’ve got the logo and MMS is working it sounds like the patch has been applied correctly. Our guess is the other issues might be Telecom-related – i.e. that something isn’t setup right at their end. If you dial your own mobile number from your mobile, do you get your voicemail? Also do you have another XT mobile you could put your SIM in to see if you can access data from there? If not then give Telecom a ring. It could be that for whatever reason they haven’t enabled these services properly for you.

So my recommendation is if you are not a heavy user then sign up to the Combo plan which is under $15/month and if you will get 20min free talk time (Remember on the XT Network you are billed per the second, unlike on the old network you would be billed per the minute) Besides the Combo plan does not lock you in into a fixed contract. Then add the $12/m data plan. Good luck with your decision.

I’m on XT prepaid and I find it fine. The good thing is you can use what you want when you want it. Unless your phone usage matches a plan perfectly then I would go prepaid.

I have Non-stop TXT addon for $12/month and I usually have the data 120MB but I have that disabled for this month since I won’t be out of WiFi range for long.

Good luck with your decision. Prepaid details for XT can be found on their website.

I switched to XT on my iPhone 3 months ago but have been suffering from random data access. I did the carrier bundle but have only been able to access data for 1 week out of 4 so far until today.

The fix was to actually switch the phone completely off and restart. I usually only swicth to airplane mode at night and use on WiFi in many locations so have still been able to access data much of the time.

However there is 1 strange feature I have noted with voicemail. Sometimes the voicemail won’t access with the correct pin numnber even though that shows on the screen.

It seems to be a time / tone error. If the number is clicked for more than a fraction of a second it counts it as a double click even though it clearly shows the correct number on the screen.

Wondering if others have noticed this?

  106. Steve says:

@JasonK – if that happens again, I would have your mobile looked at by a repair agent. That does not sound normal. With regards to voicemail PIN, that has been discussed around the site quite a lot. Best thing to do is to disable the PIN from inside the options in the mailbox itself — after all, if you’ve got your iPhone secured do you need the extra layer of security of a voicemail PIN too?

    Folks,

Having just completed the XT carrier bundle installation I’m pleased to say that it all worked easily, but may I make the following observations as feedback:

    1) the .zip file doesn’t extract cleanly as it has multiple instances of the same file name (‘pc-itunes-fix’ and ‘_MACOSX’ as both file and as a folder) – so using the PDF instructions to ‘extract the zip to your desktop’ gave duplicate file name errors, but I notice the video instructions drag the needed files individually (and thus extract one at a time without striking this issue with duplicate names)

    2) the PDF says ’simply restart your phone’ but the logo and voicemail button were up and working without a restart (so is a restart necessary?)

Thanks heaps for all the help and info on the site – it’s great.

  123. You just need to go into Settings >> General >> Network >> Data Roaming…. and make sure it switched to off. I would also make sure that ‘Push’ is switched off and that your emails are set to fetch manually, or just disable them while you are away.

That story is ridiculous. Firstly, I searched Google for “data roaming charges xt” the top (unsponsored) link goes to the Telecom Roaming page which gives you all the details of the pricing.

Secondly he knew about the data roaming switch and continued to use it.

If he chose not to check the pricing and then to use it then that’s his own fault.

“Most people who just turn on their phone won’t know it would have an effect on their bill …

You might not realise it but the data roaming just chews through the data whether you like it or not.”

The “Data Roaming Switch” defaults to ‘Off’ so he would have had to switch it on. He used 42MB in the 10 days he was away (based on $343 divided by $8 per MB) which is roughly 4MB a day and in my experience is average for iPhone users.

where he sent or received 50 emails and visited six web pages

EVERYONE who owns an iPhone knows that the iPhone uses data all the time, even when your not using it.

He got a “huge shock” when the bill arrived, especially because it was not clear what the charges were for.

See link above to the Telecom page, it’s pretty clear to me!

The NZHerald should be ashamed at running that story. It has had no proper research done and is just another attack at the big bad Telecom who, no matter what, for some people will never be able to do anything right.

@ whatarethey: That definitely isn’t a side-effect of the carrier bundle that you’re experiencing there. Try a reboot, if that doesn’t solve it try a restore (after which you’ll need to reinstall our bundle) and if that doesn’t solve it give Apple a call.
