Available very very soon
Here’s an update we’ve been waiting for (it seems like was ages ago we first announced this). The TomTom car kit for iPhone should be available within a week and the price……..The car kit will set you back $199 plus the cost of the app ($119.99)
It will be available from Harvey Norman and Super Cheap Auto (unconfirmed)
So at a total of $318.99 for app and dock is it worth it, to be honest I think it probably is. The lowest stand alone unit runs at $299 and that doesn’t have hands free calling (via bluetooth) included. To get that you are going to be looking at spending at least $599 (for a TomTom unit)
Note: Prices taken from TomTom website and do not reflect any specials individual stores may have
Read our review of the car kit here.
Read our app review here. Not got the app? get that here.
What do you think? Worth the money? Let us know in the comments.

Not worth $200, I won’t be buying it. Nor the app.

Far too expensive IMO, I would of paid 200-250 for both the app and the mount.

If it was “just” a holder you would be right…over priced….However I think its a bargain! It will run my present Sygic App, (which I won here!)
or any other Nav. app for that matter.
So what do you get for that $199 cost??……
1) Hands free blue tooth connectivity.
2) A stand alone GPS unit that acts as a “turbo” for the GPS unit already in the phone (greatly enhancing its performance).
3) Built in speaker for clearer turn by turn instructions.
4) Built in phone charger.
All the above for $199? A steal!
You add it up.!
Cheers
Roger

I got all excited when I first thought you meant App & Car Kit for only $199. Sounds too good to be true.
I’m not willing to part with anything more than $120 max for the car kit. It’s clearly overpriced, IMHO.

Ill probably be getting it.

I’m going to buy one. Just a bit short of the $$$ to buy one, so if anyone wants to give me one for christmas…. I’ll do a review driving around the big smoke

I have to agree with Roger in this one, apart from the fact you need an iPhone, the cost of the total bundle is low in comparision to other standalone GPS devices and if you go with Sygic or Co-Pilot it's even less. It seems that because it's an iPhone app/holder people think it is of less value. You pay for convenience in this world, and there's nothing more convenient than this. Plus the exchange rate isn't bad, if you bought it in the UK you'd be paying £100 which is $227 so cheaper than overseas.
I think it's a good price, cheaper than UK which I did not expect.

I definitely want this for Christmas, just have to work on the wife!! When will it be in stores??

I would have bought it mainly for the bluetooth handsfree connectivity if I didn’t have a Bluetooth headset already and a holder/charger for the car already with an audio cable connected to my car stereo… only cost me $45 from Trademe! GPS signal has been quite good generally, no major issues, and I love my Sygic and find it very reliable when I need it

I have just purchased my iphone 3gs from Harvey Norman although the wife won’t let me have it until xmas. I’m already on vodafone prepay. I have been waiting for the tomtom car kit so it’s great news that they might be in stock at HN this week, my son is in the UK on business at the moment and he is struggling to find me one, he has been to several Apple stores and non of them have had them in stock. I won’t get the app until I have the car kit, saw one on Trade Me at the weekend, he was asking $399, having a laugh or what. I’ve already got a tomtom with NZ maps over here so I’m looking forward to comparing the two, let you now the outcome once I’m set up.

I have found something better but only to those who have $$$ to burn, The Magellan Car Kit, Yep it can handle you iPhone in a case and you can compare it to TomTom car kit, I mean I won’t go naked on my 3GS as I know it won’t look after it go naked. And my safety concern for my phone.

Well it looks as if they have landed in NZ as there are now 4 of them on Trade Me and all are asking between $300 and $399, some have got bids on so some people are desperate to get there hands on them, any more news from Harvey Norman and Super Cheap Auto. I have asked at HN and he said he would check with his supplier, hasn’t come back to me yet. My son is a flight back from the UK and he hasn’t mentioned he had got one for me so it doesn’t look as if he had much luck.

Update….I went on Trade Me and asked the question “where did you but it from” They answered Apple online from LA, so it looks as if they haven’t arrived yet after all, just some entrapenuer out to make a quick buck.

@Dan, at least you have options. I have legit source if people wanted to get stuff from Amazon that won’t ship out of USA to NZ, but it’ll cost them as I have to arrange shipment with my friend.

@MX28080 – I have spoken with Magellan and unfortunately it won't be available here. So if you are wanting it you will need to order from the likes of Amazon and have it sent to a friend in the US, who can then ship it over to you.
Just noticed that the NZ app is down to $99.95 on the itunes app store until early Jan 2010.
