TomTom Car Kit
We have been receiving a lot of questions about the car kit for TomTom, so we thought we’d get in touch with them to get some answers. Unfortunately at this stage they haven’t given us any details on pricing but have said that they expect it will be available at the end of summer (US). Here’s what they said….
“More information on the specifications and pricing as of the car kit as soon as the car kit becomes available, which we expect around the end of summer.
Some of the details we can share are:
The TomTom car kit for iPhone is a new car kit especially developed for the iPhone 3G and 3Gs. It ensures easy and safe docking in the car to securely hold and power the iPhone while driving.
Furthermore it offers:
- enhanced GPS performance especially in areas where GPS reception is limited, i.e. when driving through a city with high buildings or forests
- a Built-in speaker for loud and clear voice instructions and hands-free calling in the car
- optional music playback over the car stereo, via standard audio cable (not included with the car kit)
- car charger to charge the iPhone to avoid running out of battery while driving;
You can easily attach the TomTom car kit on the windscreen or dashboard of a car. It offers a secure way of docking the iPhone (with one hand) and automatically connects with all functionalities of the car kit when plugging the car charger into the car kit. For the best view of the screen (and route ahead) you can change the iPhone from portrait to landscape mode. In addition, the car charger ensures the iPhone is powered at all times.
After the iPhone is placed in the car kit, it enhances the GPS performance for optimal use in the car. The built-in speaker of the car kit provides drivers with loud and clear voice instructions and allows for easy hands-free calling. It will also work with the iPod touch and third-party apps”
If we get any more information from TomTom we’ll let you know, in the meantime check the gallery below for a bunch of images and a video to whet your appetite.

This looks like a very classy piece of hardware for iPhone.I am not a techno person and am not interested with the tomtom application BUT I would like to use this for handsfree phone use and playing music through the car stereo. Is this possible without buying the app??

TomTom haven't actually revealed much in the way of solid information about how it will be sold, but I imagine you'd be able to buy it separately. Otherwise have you seen our DLO Ventmount review? That is available now, is a fraction of the likely cost of this mount and does the things you want it to do.

Looks like the TomTom car kit will be available in October (hopefully that’s everywhere not just US)
Not sure if this has already been mentioned or not. But I just saw the price advertised on Expansys NZ… Golly! $324.99 – Excluding GST!!!

@Paul – have you seen the vent mount? it is ideal for just connecting to your car stereo and about $35 from Magnum Mac (it is reviewed somewhere on this site).

@iphonic…..
1. Do you mean “not very good price” cause that is expensive
2. People shouldn’t be allowed to list them on TradeMe if they haven’t got them in hand. The car kit hasn’t been released yet so how do they have them.
Buyer beware is all I would say.
I have found the same item is for sale at sella.co.nz , for a cheaper price. Its probably due to TradeMe’s ridiculous succes fees.

It’s sold for $289, which is a reasonable price for this kit.

1. yeah. I was gonna write :" not an affordable price" , sorry for the typo.
2. I was suspicious about it , but in the seller's history, it shows that the seller sold the same item for $342 before. And got a + feedback, this means that its a genuine item.

I ordered one of these car kits in December and it has just arrived – but in the meantime got supplied one from work. So I'm selling the new one, still in its box on trade me.
