Steve, thank you so much; enable 3G was off, setting it ‘on’ got me one retrieved txt then it went ‘no signal’ again; turned ‘roaming to ‘on’ (is that useful?) and did the ‘airplane mode’ and I HAVE A PHONE AGAIN!! on the eve of sending it to Auckland for a replacement and buying a cheap voda as a backup (might still do that just to be safe )…fingers crossed it stays fixed, if not, will send for replacement. Blessing upon techies!

First things first: Check that you haven't disabled 3G somehow. Go to settings –> General –> Network and make sure that 'Enable 3G' is set to 'on. If its not that, try putting your phone into Airplane mode for 30 seconds, then back out again. If the problem persists then yes take it back to where you bought it. Doesn't sound like this is anything to do with the XT outage.

Hi all; this a query; 6 days after the T'com XT crashed, I still have no signal on my 3G iphone. (live in Tauranga). Have turned off and on; removed sim card (T'com) and replaced; tested at T'com shop with alternate sim card…not the sim card at fault. Have just done a backup and 'restore' and still no service.

Anyone having the same prob? any ideas or do I take back to supplier (Mac shop) and get a replacement??? chrisg

Tethering can be enabled for XT on v3.1.2 iPhone by using blackra1n. It was developed by Geohot who released the original iPhone cracks.

I have just done it on my XT iPhone 3GS – all working perfectly.

General Instructions:

0. MAKE SURE you are updated to 3.1.2 – V important.

1. Plug in your phone

2. Launch Blackra1n and click the "make it ra1n" button

3. Wait for a reboot (yes, you will see a screen with a kid in it)

4. On reboot, scroll to the last page of your apps and click the "blackra1n" icon

5. Click on "Sn0w"

6. Wait about 10 seconds – if it shows a windows called "post install Log for Sn0w". You can quit the app (click the bottom button of the iPhone).

7. Reboot your iPhone.

8. Tethering is all go.

If you have no wireless after the reboot, go to General->Reset and choose Reset Network Settings

If this breaks your phone – please don't blame me. It worked for me.

Netshare app still works if you were lucky enough to get it before apple pulled it. Otherwise, you can jailbreak and use a tethering app from Cydia.

Telecom invited customers to use the iPhone on their network, at no stage did they say Tethering/MMS or any other carrier specific features (think visual voicemail) would be available. Tethering is controlled mainly by Apple and unfortunately at this stage there is no fix, unless Telecom become an Official Carrier. We are trying to work out if we can do it any other way, but at this stage all we just keeping hitting a brick wall. Once it becomes available you can be sure it will be here first.

Posted this on geekzone but figured would try here as well. Has anyone been able to get tethering working on OS 3.1 yet? Does the introduction of AT&Ts carrier file perhaps lead the way to XT getting an “official” carrier file signed too? Anyone contacted Telecom to find out what they have to say about this given they openly invited Iphone owners to switch to their network?

You need to reinstall the bundle and it should work. Not sure why it has lost the settings but apparently this is the standard message you get if you don't have a custom bundle installed.

So I reinstalled, and when I clicked on “Set up tethering” it again said “Please contact Telecom NZ”. Then I clicked on it again in frustration and it opened the tethering menu.

Dan, it seems to work ok for me now – is there a proper “procedure” to stopping the tethering connection?

IIRC last time I simply unplugged the USB cable, but this time I went into the iPhone options and turned tethering “off” before I unplugged the cable. Then when I reenabled it, there was no problem (tried this 3 times in a row).

So did I not “shutdown” the connection properly last time or something to cause that problem??

Hi Dan, the quoted versions above (3.0.1 and Telecom NZ 5.0) are direct from the “About” page in the iPhone settings).

In desperation I “reset network settings” and tried again – this time it restored my “set up tethering” option but when I chose that it says “To enable thethering on this account, contact Telecom NZ”.

3.0.1 with telecom nz 5.0 as carrier.

If you are running 3.0 and you have a copy of 3.0 you can restore to it by doing a shift (option on mac) restore. If you do a normal restore (i.e. not holding down the shift or option button) then you will be forced to go to 3.1

Am confused by Mak’s comment – if my iPhone running 3.0 crashes and needs restore, will I not be able to restore to 3.0 using a downloaded ipcc file? Or are you saying that Apple just won’t supply older firmware files any longer?

I think this is a question of a “battle” between the old and new ways of carriers looking at the data market.
The old way is to promote “unlimited” data plans (to get as many customers as possible). If everyone uses their data plans to do everything and anything, of course the networks will be slow and unreliable, so to prevent this they want to control the way the end-user can have access, e.g., not allowing tethering (and in some cases, charge separately for tethering).
The new way is to market different data plans, with different prices, which include a specified amount of data a month (and sometimes different maximum speeds), and not care with how the consumers use it – that’s the way we have it here in Portugal, and I guess in a lot of European countries.

The problem is that not allowing tethering is complicated, because it relies on setting specific limits (it’s rumored that AT&T will cut connections if you try to transfer files bigger than 10MB), and shredding the user experience to bits by moves like this latest one.

The iPhone has been the best mobile experience, by far, that I’ve ever had, but I’m very disappointed at Apple for doing something like this, and not finding a better way to match the goals of the different carriers in different markets in a way that wouldn’t hurt consumers who did nothing wrong. I’ll think twice about getting another iPhone when I think of upgrading. Apple has shown that they will remove important features, which other tactics might they employ in the future?

@moviemichael – I’m not sure it’s a case of Apple being uncompetitive, Moviemichael. The issue is that carriers have different attitudes to tethering – some don’t mind it, some don’t want to allow it on their networks and many want to charge the end-user a monthly fee for it. In that regard it does make sense that tethering is locked down unless there is an agreement with the carrier that it be enabled.

Seems like this is an issue that should be brought up with the commerce commission. Pressure needs to be put on Apple for instituting anti-competitive practices like this.

Hi there – on XT too with the .ipcc file from this site. All works well… and understand about thethering disappearing – hope it can be resolved soon.

On another point, my iPhone 3GS seems to have reverted to sending SMS to more than one recipient as an MMS. This was an earlier issue that was resolved, but has now resurfaced with 3.1. Anyone else experiencing this again?

So just to be clear, everything else works (MMS, Voicemail, roaming etc etc) except Tethering? Can someone please confirm that it is just the tethering that stops if upgrading to 3.1 (or buying a new 3GS that has 3.1 installed already) Actually can someone confirm that we can install the XT Carrier File onto a 3GS that already has 3.1 on it.

@camtab – Yes I can confirm that it is ONLY tethering that is affected by 3.1. MMS, Voicemail, everything else works just like it always did. And yes, you can install our carrier bundle on a phone that already has 3.1 on it.

No way the moment. It's similar to how you can no longer downgrade an iPhone 3GS to anything below 3.1 (thus, a restore from a broken 3.0 phone would be forced to 3.1) — the IPCC carrier files are signed by Apple which can't be forged very easily at all.

Seemingly they are refusing to sign unofficial carriers (ie. carriers that don't sell the iPhone, even if unlocked).

On Vodafone it will work as they are an official carrier. It is only unofficial carriers that don't work.

You mention XT and 2 degress, what about Vodafone tethering? I got it working with a downloaded APN profile using 3.0.1, but it’s gone now that I have upgraded to 3.1. I’m using unlocked pre-paid iPhone 3gs on Vodafone.

Hi Dangermouse. We just tested that with the carrier bundle installed and it didn't work – i.e. tethering is still disabled. Leave it with us – we're testing other avenues at the moment.
