Announcement: iOS 4 and our Carrier Bundles

Bugger.

Well everyone, the time is nearly upon us for iOS 4 and it is with great sadness that we have to announce that our carrier bundles no longer work with the new iOS 4. We have a copy of the stock bundles from the first beta of iOS4 and upon opening them up we have found that Apple are signing them again. Unfortunately the stock bundles haven’t changed in the public release [of iOS 4].

You may remember when Tethering in 3.1.2 was blocked because Apple were signing the APN’s in the bundles. When they released 3.1.3 they changed the way they signed them and this allowed us to get them working with all the features.

Unfortunately, they are signing the bundles in a new way again but this time it is at root level. This is now disabling them completely, whereas before it only disabled the specific feature they wanted to block.

We have tried and tried but unfortunately we were unable to get past Apple’s signature in order to get them working.

Now this isn’t to say we are going to stop. We will continue to get the stock bundles as the new versions of iOS are released and we will continue to try and get them working again.

The plus side is that you can still tether with iOS 4. The only things you won’t have, that the carrier bundles did, are the custom carrier logo in the taskbar (purely cosmetic) and the voicemail button. You can install all the other settings manually (keep reading) and we have a ‘kinda’ work around for the voicemail button.

The carrier settings can be applied by visiting www.iphonewzealand.co.nz/nz-carriers/ from your iPhone and following our new guide.

Also in the guide you will find a handy button that will enable you to add an icon to your home-screen to quickly dial your voicemail.

A short video guide on the new web app is below. If you want to see the settings from your desktop and manually type them in then you can go to the iPhone Settings navigation menu above.

We would like to thank everyone for there support and help whilst we have been trying to get the bundles working on iOS and we hope that you all continue to keep coming back to us for the latest news, tips, reviews, help and support with for your iDevice. If anyone else out there can get them going then please do get in touch and we will certainly update our current 3.1.3 bundles.

Thanks

Dan and Steve

Thankyou for trying with the carrier bundle, it will be with a tinge of regret when I can no longer have the little ‘XT’ logo in the corner of the screen. I appreciate your efforts and of course will be here frequently to keep up to date with iOS in NZ!

the old way of changing your voicemail number by gonig to the dial screen on your iPhone, and dial the following string, then press CALL.

    *5005*86*YOURVOICEMAILNUMBER#

This worked for me on 2degrees.

I’ve just asked Telecom if they are going to make an ‘Apple Approved’ Carrier bundle. I’ll keep you posted on the outcome.

Aww I’ve been looking forward to the iOS4 ever since they announced it. But now I’m disappointed to hear the XT carrier bundle wont work the same way it does on the current OS.
Oh well, I have full faith that you guys will work it out. More power to you guys!

    @ Dan:

Well I have iOS4 and I googled for a fix and found that code (may be slightly differerent – trying to find site I went to again) and now my vociemail works on 2degrees. I have just tired it agian and now it does not work – the only thing I have changed since then is I have added my number under the settings (which I cant seem to leave blank now) so I dont know if that makes a difference or I have the wrong code.

I can confirm that the method I detailed above “gonig to the dial screen on your iPhone, and dial the following string, then press CALL. *5005*86*YOURVOICEMAILNUMBER# (I used 202 for 2degrees) works for me. I treid changing it to an invalid voicemail number eg 203 and then back to 202 to prove it works. When you enter this code and push call, the screen only flashed for me without any confirmation message, but when I push the voicemail button it had changed the number. be interested to hear if this works for anybody else.

I wonder what’s stopping them? Most other countries have multiple official carriers. Come on NZ!

FYI we are also looking at getting the “webapp” made into a native app so that you always have your settings with you and don’t need to have an internet connection to apply them. More on that if and when it happens.

@ aidanhill: Well….. it is supposed to the 21st (US time), they don’t normally release until mid-morning (going by previous years), but according to an email conversation we have been having with another reader, it is oly the US that’ll be getting it.

I don’t believe this to be true personally, and although they have spoken with Apple who have said this to them (apparently NZ is going to be late July like the iPhone 4) it is very very unlikely that there will be seperate launch dates for iOS 4.

Therefore we should see it in the morning 22nd NZ time.

Thanks guys, I’m sure you’ve been trying hard to get this working so we appreciate your efforts.

From watching your video, at least it now displays the full ‘Telecom NZ’ at the top of the screen instead of the ‘Telec…’ that used to be there on OS 3.0 before your carrier bundle was applied – that just looked hideous! So I guess if we can’t have the logo at least we have the full wording!

Looking forward to the day you get it working again!

This didn't work for me. I'm on Telecom XT with iOS4.

I wonder if there is a way to fake the carrier update OTA?

Apple only approve carrier bundles for official carriers, so this will only happen if Telecom gets the iPhone in its range.

Telecom should move to do this if they want customers to stay on their network with their iPhone's. Not everyone is savvy enough to look for the APN settings etc. And it's a shame the voicemail button won't work until they do.

OK we can confirm that 2degrees users can use the voicemail button.

We just plugged a 2degrees SIM card to a clean iOS 4 iPhone and it just worked (without dialing any codes into the iPhone). When we tried to program a different number it made no difference, it still worked.

Is it something to do with the XT SIM cards? We are looking into it.
