hey i stupidly downloaded ios4 for a 3g iphone on xt, and now I can't even use my iPhone at all, it just comes up with the plug and itunes thing on my screen? i've tried downgrading it to 3.1.3 using lifehackers suggestions but its not working. Any suggestions I need my iPhone back!!

I can survive with no logo, and there are a few workarounds for voicemail, but the iPhone is essentially a cosmetic device, and then they stop us from making it so. *sigh*

Yep iPhone 4, the screen is out of this world. No XT logo. Says Telecom NZ in full with no …..’s or scrolling. OMG this screen is exquisite!

I can confirm this works on a new, factory unlocked, black 32gb, iPhone 4.0 imported from the UK which arrived on monday. For xt i dialed *5005*86*083210# and pressed call, the screen flashed and the voicemail button worked. I must say this is a far more elegant solution than the creative but unnecessary icon thing. I know we must have spent a long time on that, but really, this is the correct way to do it, at least on this iphone 4 on xt. Also i’m very happy tethering works, I may have had to turn on data roaming for tethering settings to show up.

Hold on, so you get the notification native on the phone app (1+ on the phone icon) but you just can’t call Voicemail from the phone app natively?

Having not used an iPhone yet as my primary phone (iPhone 4 will be my first), I'm a bit unclear on what is specifically lacking in the voicemail button when used on XT. Are you still notified (with the red notifications) that you have unheard voicemails? But they can only be listened to by dialing the seperate number shown in your article? Or is the entire voicemail button in the Phone app effectively dead? Cheers for any help.

@ sharpy: The thing that doesn’t work is the voicemail button, if pressed when used on XT it does nothing. You do still get the red dot to show you have new voicemail messages though. You’ll see a 1+ on the phone app icon. Does that make sense?

Thanks for trying with the carrier bundles guys, I think everyone loved the result on the OS3 versions. Pity about the problems now.

I am annoyed as I payed full price for my iphone and bought it from apple. I even checked with them that there wouldn't be anything carrier specific about the phone when I bought it and was assured I could use it with any carrier. I suppose they weren't telling me fibs, just not the whole truth.

I tried the number sequence listed above and now my voicemail works on 2degrees, I used the international number though, not 202

is anyone else getting the annoying call divert message every time you make a call. I know it goes away by itself, but it is a bit annoying. thoughts?

@ Dan: You know, that'd probably be easier! Either that or convince them to get new SIM cards that have a different a MCC/MNC – but thats probably not possible on a Virtual Operator setup…

@ Dan: Yep, it sure did – and if I hit the reset settings it returns it to the Voda settings as well. I guess if that is the case, tethering is probably a no go unless Voda update the carrier settings with Apple to include the Telstra APN?

@ Dan: Just doing a little thinking and think I may have come up with the issue – the Mobile Country Code (MCC) and the Mobile Network Code (MNC) of the Telstra SIM is 53001, which is the same as Vodafone right? If I’m thinking correctly, that means that the iPhone isn’t jumping to the unknown bundle (like it does for Telecom/2Degrees etc) – and by changing the APN settings – it breaks what the iPhone is expecting to see and hence the tethering option is gone??

Alright everyone – I think that telecom and apple caught me on the wrong side of my bed, before I had coffee, after a late night watching the world cup. I was looking forward to iOS4 (except maybe the ads bit), and this was a disappointing user experience.

I had a flashback to the upgrade to 3.1 which broke everything and I had to go looking for new carrier packs etc.

Thanks to those who made these carrier packs by the way – I didn't realise that the geekzone forum packs came from here.

I didn't know that tethering was up and running again – I am new to this site – thanks for pointing it out – I have it working now – thankyou!

I'm still pissed off at Telecom and Apple over this – if Apple sells it unlocked and Telecom offers an iPhone plan, then the phone should be fully supported – it really kills the point of buying an elegant Apple product if you have to kludge the functionality.

Full sequence:
1. Updated settings per the image…
2. Went out of settings…had no joy, bounced iphone.
3. Still no joy – went back to settings, found they’d cleared themselves (assume I hit the ‘reset’ button accidentally)
4. Replaced settings again…
5. No joy
6. Typed despairing note on iphonewzealand
7. Email started coming through

Didn’t do anything other than that – it’s a 16gb 3Gs on Telecom XT – working perfectly now.

To enable teethering you simply go "settings" – "general" – "network" – "cellular data network" and if you scroll down you will see "internet tethering" and you type 'internet.telecom.co.nz' (without the speech marks) next to APN. Done. There is also a whole tutorial on this from the team on a previous post (like yesterday)

Just as an aside "not working as designed"..the Iphone was designed to work with Vodafone NZ only in New Zealand so using XT is not using it as designed anyway (but like you, I and many others all use XT).

@ Dan: Yep, is a NZ New iPhone, bought it from a store in Dunedin. We’ve got 6 iPhones at work on TelstraClear, all with the same tethering issue. I restored iOS4 (been running since the Gold Master was released). I have thrown in a 2Degrees SIM and it works fine – just seems to be a TelstraClear issue!

@ frast726: Not sure why that would be?? Is it a “NZ new” iPhone? Did you restore to iOS 4 or update? Maybe have a read of the comments here where people are restoring bacause the update path is buggy for some people.

Having said that of course that’s no reason for not being able to Tether on 3.1.3. Unfortunately we don’t have access to Telstra SIMs to do any testing and see if yours is a unique case. Would be interested to see if others on Telstra have any issues.

I’m on Telstra, and I’ve never been able to tether, not in 3.1.3 or now in iOS4. Am I doing something wrong? I notice in your WebApp and on the Carrier Settings page you list a separate Internet Tethering section, I don’t seem to have this!

Yes telecom had attempted to secure iPhones but was unable too. Gen-I was sourcing them for customers and installing the carrier bundle made here but were buying the handsets outright from apple online like anyone else.

ugh…16gb 3Gs upgraded…APN settings altered per site, error message says ‘You are not subscribed to a cellular data service’.
What am I missing ppl?

Woah, I think you’re blowing this up a little Kyoto. Literally the only thing that doesn’t work is the voicemail button, and this is easily gotten around by adding ‘Voicemail’ to your contacts and then saving it to your favourites.

Erm… nope – tethering works fine. Has done for a while. Try it now.

@ kyotolaw: I am not going to wade into your phone being “broken” or not (i agree with Dan and Steve that its not but I feel your pain) but the teethering comment is incorrect as iOS4 does allow teethering on XT..without any bundles needed. You just put in the APNs as mentioned a few times by the team here and you can use your Iphone as a modem.

I’m not a jailbreaker type – I want it to “just work” – obviously I’m a brainwashed apple user/trained seal.

I have 3 weeks before my Telecom contract is breakable without penalties – I think the plan at the moment may be to wait for the iPhone 4, buy it with discount from Vodafone, give the 3GS to the wife and bring that over to Vodafone also.

I had delusions of nationwide high speed tethering on XT a year ago when I bought the 3GS, but that got broken in an upgrade also.

Shouldn’t have been tempted by that $600 credit with free 250MB data that Telecom waved in front of us…

And you want to forego all the good in iOS 4 for those two things??… because that’s the only “extras” you get by having the bundles installed, nothing more nothing less.

There are a couple of workarounds for the voicemail button and the XT logo is just eye-candy.

Now that I have “upgraded” to iOS4, the voicemail speeddial button on the phone doesn’t work and my XT logo has gone.

I’m on the phone with Telecom support now – we live tested it and it seems as though there is a visual representation that a voicemail comes in, so that is better than expected.

Nothing more frustrating than an upgrade breaking features though.

As I said in the previous post, I wish I’d found this website before I upgraded so I knew what to expect.

I got my original XT carrier pack from the geekzone forums about a year ago.

OK we can confirm that 2degrees users can use the voicemail button.

We just plugged a 2degrees SIM card to a clean iOS 4 iPhone and it just worked (without dialing any codes into the iPhone). When we tried to program a different number it made no difference, it still worked.

Is it something to do with the XT SIM cards? We are looking into it.
