App Preview: Sella

Sella App coming soon!

For some time now, iPhone users have been asking for a Trademe or Sella app. TradeMe users have been more vocal than Sella when it comes to talking about an app (and more-so why they don’t have one), perhaps due to the sheer number of TradeMe users. But little did we know that Sella have been quietly working away in the background on an app which is sure to see the folk at TradeMe snapping their pencils.

They have just submitted the app to the store and it should be live within the next few days and will be free to download. They have sent us a preview to take a look at and we’ll be doing a full review soon. Join us after the break for a quick look and a few images to whet the appetite..

First impressions of the app are good, very good and whilst there are a few things that we need to look more in depth at, we think users are going to like this and this could help sway the tables in favour of Sella as our new best friend for selling our old tech.

List your old stuff

The biggest feature of the app is the ability to create an auction straight from your iPhone. I did this yesterday and listed my Vado HD in less than 5 minutes.

Your Listing

Main Page

Sella is New Zealand’s “other choice” of online auction sites. It doesn’t receive as many visitors as TradeMe, and therefore may be harder to sell, but it is free. Yes, free. No commissions, no listing fees, nothing. nada. zip. diddly squat. That’s right you won’t be charged a cent for listing and selling your item (unlike TradeMe whose prices border on the ridiculous).

How? Well their advertising pays for the site to run and if you want you can add extras to your listing such as making it a featured listing. This is great, especially if you are listing something small with little to no value (therefore success and listing fees make it pointless) or if you are listing something expensive in which case high success fess would apply. Perhaps a good iPhone app will help Sella attract new users, no doubt that’s what they’re hoping.

Keep an eye here on the site or on the App store for this to go live. In the meantime if you don’t already have an account with Sella then you’ll need to sign up now because to use the app you have to be registered with Sella.

Note: if you were previously a member of zillion.co.nz then your account has been transferred to Sella and you can login using your existing details.

Well with the amount of people bemoaning a lack of a decent auction site app for NZ I’m surprised by the complete lack of comments… I reckon this looks pretty good but come on, people what do you reckon?

I’m intrigued/amazed that you can list/sell something from your phone. I certainly can’t wait to try it out.

I’m intrigued/amazed that Sella beat TradeMe to the iPhone

I guess TradeMe has moved into that space where they no longer innovate because they have a monopoly that the don’t think needs defending.

I would be surprised if Sella didn’t see a rise in auctions once this app is released

Yup, TradeMe’s absence from the game is startling. Even eBay who really DO have a monopoly (so to speak) in almost every country except NZ have an iPhone app, theirs was one of the very first apps to appear in the App Store when it was first launched. From what we’ve heard it’s due to a complete lack of APIs and the site itself would effectively have to be re-written from scratch to accommodate an app. I’m sure you’re right, I’m sure they think they don’t *need* to innovate but no doubt this will make them sit up and take it a bit more seriously.

    @ Steve:

eBay doesn’t let users list an item straight from the device though, once you try this out for yourself it really beats any other method of listing an item.

    @ reuben:
Yup I had a go with Dan’s preview copy and it really is excellent. I’ll be tempted to list stuff on Sella instead of TradeMe now just because it’s so easy (and because innovation deserves recognition!)
