App Review: SUBWAY®

Subway: Just got fresher!

The much anticipated SUBWAY® New Zealand iPhone application has finally hit the App Store, allowing owners to pre-order their sandwiches and then hop to the front of the queue, but how does it stack up? Read more for our take on this delicious application.

For a long time, Subway have offered ordering via text message, but to order this way you need to know all the codes that are required for each ingredient, which means being near a computer or keeping hold of a brochure — this has been a barrier for many, so an iPhone app has been be long sought after in our Suggest-an-App forum.

My initial thoughts are that this App is both well coded and well designed, with every feature you could possibly need in a food ordering application. It integrates seamlessly with the SUBCARD reward system and does not handle payments over the application – but rather when you pick it up in store. This makes it both secure and versatile for those without means to make internet payment (a credit or debit card).

So, when you first boot up the application, you must first enter your SUBCARD Card Number and Access code. Your card must first be registered on the Subway website, so make sure you head over here first and setup a password and fill in contact information. After which, you are presented with the main screen of the application.

The store front

Already you can see this is a very colourful and well designed application. Everything you need to access can be through this page of the application. You can edit your SUBCARD credentials by tapping into the first tab.

One of the down-right coolest and well thought out parts of this app is the restaurant select feature.

Manually select or use GPS

This offers both a method to choose your restaurant from a list or better yet, let the power of GPS find the closest restaurant to you and order from there!

Choose your weapon!

Once you have selected your desired restaurant, you can navigate back to the front page of the App and start your order. For the purposes of this review, I have chosen to order a run-of-the-mill Sub, however there are other options available.

Eeew cucumber

So, just like in store, you are required to select the type of bread, size and meat you want. You can then choose which salads you want, which dressings, whether it’s toasted — basically every option you would have in-store is covered.

For the bargain hunters among us, the app will display which flavour is the current Sub-of-the-Day and will also let you know about any other promotions that may be currently running, such as limited-period menu editions.

The app is free and saves a heap of time queuing for your favorite sandwich so hit the store at the following link and add it to your iPhone, iPod touch or iPad now.

Used this app last week in Waikanae. It worked perfectly for me. A great solution to avoiding those pesky queues. Was so nice to walk straight past 6 others in a line and pick up my subway. Great stuff

I used this tonight and made my order awesome app, I when to pick it up and noticed the guy was going to make me a pork riblet sub but I wanted the new meatball sub, What happen was I clicked on the meatball sub picture but that was linked to the pork riblet. I told the guy in the store and he probably will pass that through to management. It was luck I was there to see the mistake. Apart from that I can see myself using this alot more.

Is there a way to order extra say, sauce or other condiment? I always order with like super lots of sauce.

You can order sauce but not extra as you would like, you can however order extra cheese bacon and the likes of that.

I’ve had a mixed experience with this app, can someone tell me where/when it mentions what the sub of the day is for that day? I couldn’t find it so I never completed the order. The other thing is that it irks me that I can’t edit/delete my favorites, but on the whole it’s a very handy app

Yea this got me first time
On the home page your find the window that contains “Recents” “Favourites” and “Breakfast” actually scrolls. If you scroll down your find it also contains – subs, special offers, sub of the day, wraps etc…
Another little trick is if you get to the end of the order and want to delete the sub just swipe it from right to left and delete will appear
    Hope this helps

Ahhhhh, makes sense – the font size for the sub of the day is quite small so I looked right past it. and sorted out the favorites for delete so I’m all smiles now :D

Good first app but lots of bugs.
UI is a little clunky. Cannot edit favourite of if you have something in cart and need to correct.
Location data is not correct for some stores (eg – Put 3 stores in same location in High St in Chch). Example – http://img.skitch.com/20100806-c8ewi6wagqypeqaid5n61ax2sb.jpg shows location to be nearly 1km from where it really is located.

Search nearest store shows as 0km.. 1km 2km if in cbd and on foot, would be good to be able to tell which is 100m vs 900m away, or possibly a map?

Sub names truncated as big irrelevant icons consume over 50% of the space of text…
    eg http://img.skitch.com/20100806-byygu2xy2bjepyr1b5s75u4gxx.jpg
for those looking for Teriyaki Chicken it is called “Sweet Onion…” followed by a big red dot for served hot and a wide icon for 6GramsOfFat
