On Friday Apple released it’s new version of Mobile Me, and I have to say, I absolutely love it. It looks very very nice, and much more user friendly I have found. Read on for an overview and pictures!
First off there is the new look home screen. It is a very nice interface and I am tempted to make it my homepage.
Once you login you will be greeted with the mail screen. If you opted in for the Mail Beta a few weeks ago, you will be familiar with this page. If you didn’t, heres a pic!
Some of the features of the new iPad inspired interface as documented by Apple are:
- Widescreen and compact views
- Rules to keep your email organized everywhere
- Single-click archiving
- Formatting toolbar
- Faster performance
- Increased security with SSL
- Support for external email addresses
- Improved junk mail filtering
The biggest thing you notice is that there is no longer a group of icons in the top left corner. It is now an app switcher. This is probably my favorite feature of the whole new interface, it is a beautiful implementation.
And the full view:
Contacts, Calendars, Gallery and iDisk remain largely unchanged so I will post some pictures of them at the bottom in a gallery.
Find my iPhone however now has a dedicated app, which still requires you to re-authenticate. The interface is much nicer without you having to go through so many steps to get to it. A full screen map dominates the view with all your devices showing up on the screen. (I only have an iPhone so it’s just that)
Thats the basic overview of the changes to Mobile Me, BUT, in the same breath Apple has released an iPhone and iPad universal app (iTunes Link) which allows you to track your Apple equipment with a separate device. Quite a good idea if your iPhone is stolen and you have a friends iPhone or a 3G iPad (or visa versa).
The easiest way to get the new app is to go to www.me.com on your iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch. Apple has changed the way this page behaves, it used to be a static page that told you to set up Mobile Me on your device. It now has links to Apples three apps – iDisk, Gallery and now Find my iPhone.
Choose the app that you wish to install and you will be linked to the mobile App Store.
Login to the app and you will be confronted with the map:
Tap the ‘Find My iPhone’ tab on the top left and you will be taken to a list of all your devices, obviously only one for me.
You can still use the app to do all the standard Find my iPhone features (Remote wipe, lock and send a message to the phone) just tap the arrow on the right of the device name in the map view.
I really love the new interface and I feel Apple is heading in the right direction with Mobile Me, lets see what happens with those rumors about Mobile Me becoming free for all!
What do you think of the new interface? Feel free to comment!

Big fan of the layout. Dan I had some issues finding the iPad to start with but finds it ok now… Might just be minor delay for initial location

The App Switcher is the dumbest thing apple has ever done.
the rest are good. apart from the fact half of me.com is new and half is the same old look (side menu, rollovers etc.) kinda feels like im paying them to test what works.
and i went from using a complete services to some thing that is half finished.
let the team down apple. @ camtab:
