20MB is now the max size
Hey folks, I know this has been doing the rounds this morning but I thought I’d do a quick post just to make sure all our readers have the heads-up.
Apple have changed the file size limit on app downloads when you are connected over GPRS, EDGE or 3G. Previously the limit was 10MB and this stopped any app over that size from being downloaded if you weren’t connected to wi-fi. They have increased it to 20MB and for the likes of the U.S where there are no data limits this is fine, but for us here in NZ where data limits apply it is worth noting the size of the file before you download it.
If you are worried about using upto 20MB of your data allocation in one hit for the month then you can check the file size before downloading it. If the app is a new download you can get this info from the bottom of the app info screen.

Check the size first
Unfortunately if it is an update you can’t check it from the update screen, so if you really need the update then it may pay to search for the app and look at the app info page first, although this may not show the actual size of the update it will tell you the size of the app so you can make a judgment call (sometimes apps are patched so the update is smaller than the actual app).
