Ask iPhonewzealand: How do I get my free iPhone 4 case?

Ask iPhonewzealand

No doubt about it – yesterday was epic. Probably the most intense gadget rollercoaster we’ve ever been on! But now that you’ve bought your iPhone 4 (either in-store or via the Apple Online Store), how do you get your free case? We’ve been receiving lots of emails to this effect so we thought we’d help shed some light.

Case Program - Now live for NZ

Ordering your free case is done via an app that you download to the iPhone itself. Unfortunately for those who have ordered via the Apple Online Store, there is no parallel ordering process in place so you’re going to have a long wait followed by another long wait.

To get the app, you can click this link to open it in iTunes. Once downloaded you can browse the options open to you and make your selection. Apple will then dispatch your order. To be eligible for the free case you must buy your iPhone before 30th September and then you must place your case order within 30 days of purchase.

Cases take between two to four weeks to be delivered.

If you can’t wait that long and want to protect your device (or your calls from the antenna issue) from day one, then don’t forget you can buy a range of iPhone cases either from Apple direct via the online store or through retailers – you can then use your free case as a spare once it arrives.

What happens if the phone doesn’t arrive within 30 days of purchase, do you know if we can still get a free bumper? Just in case the 3 weeks turns into 4 or 5. Not that I don’t trust Apple/Vodafone timing announcements …

It’s a shame the only way to order the free case is with your iPhone 4. Since most of us will be waiting a few weeks, it would be nice to be eligable to order the free case now, rather than having to wait another few weeks once the iPhone 4 arrives.

I would doubt it. To fix it would require a redesign of at least that area, then have it be subject to field testing and so forth. Not to mention the case program is the solution as far as Apple is concerned.

There IS no antennagate in New Zealand, I’d say it only exists in EXTREMLEY low reception areas. I mean, EXTREMLEY low.

Myself and my friend got a iPhone 4 yesterday, and have tried the reception around Auckland.
The worst was when I had 2 bars, I death gripped and it went down to 1 bar, but didn’t drop reception completely. In places where I have 4 bars (my house), if I grip the phone, my reception INCREASES to 5 bars. I’ve tried 80 times cause I thought it was just being silly but nope, my phone increases.

If you live in Auckland, the ‘reception issue’ is not an issue.

It has to be a painful process to get anything that is for FREE from any supplier not just from Apple.

In Christchurch near airport it is still an issue. 4 bars while phone on table… finger pressed on join between two antennae and it drops to 2 bars within a minute. Then again I ould not normally do that in a call!! and it did not drop call.
For me holding the phone for talking is not an issue as I hold with finger tips rather than club hand death grip.. but did not realise when I hold phone for applications I late it on my palm of hand which makes contact with a number of edges.

Also noticed at one time I got the round circle for GPRS instead of 3G and then had a speedtest with 9kbs !!!
This is in metro Christchurch!! less than 1k of signal tower at burnside park.
I though it supported 900MHz extended 3G but to get this was disappointing.. then again I have always had dreadful signal from VF in around Avonhead Burnside.
If iPhone 4 was not supporting 900MHz I would have switched to XT in a flash (might still yet). Is it possible that there are pockets there that are still 2G?

On a good 3G it is much faster than the iPhone3G and had 1600kbs upload!!

No, it looks for your phone's IMEI (serial number) and will know it's not an iPhone 4.

Installing it now, thanks for the heads up.

Time of purchase is when you get the phone not when you order it.

In the first floor of my home (2 story) I can get it to lose full service if I touch the seam. Only seen that happen twice so far. If I don't touch it, the phone gets around 4 bars.

My case isn't supposed to ship until 29.9 :(
