Can’t wait til July for your iPhone 4? Apple UK selling iPhone 4 unlocked from June 24th

Ready for Kiwi networks a month early

Well, here’s a surprise. Like the US, iPhones in the UK have been locked to their respective carriers until now. As of late last night with the pre-ordering system for the countries in the first wave going live, the UK online Apple Store is now offering the iPhone 4 unlocked (or ‘SIM-free’ as they call it in the UK). Head past the ‘read now’ for the details.

Pricing is £499 (NZ$1061) for the 16GB model and £599 (NZ$1273) for the 32GB. This means that if you have family or friends in the UK (and so many of us do), an unlocked iPhone 4 could be yours within two weeks. The only downsides are of course the postage and any duty should customs choose to slap you with it, plus the risk of having no warranty.

Unfortunately for some, though, it does look like the lack of white option at launch extends beyond just AT&T as you’ll note in the screenshot that it’s unavailable for pre-order in the UK as well.

I just bought 2 of these from UK Apple store via a friend in the UK. If you are considering doing the same a couple of things, firstly be patient with the Apple store, it took almost an hour to get my order through, every time submit order was pushed it would error out. Secondly my confirmed ship date is “by July 2nd” I am presuming that when they say “by” it means latest and there is a hope of ship on launch day 24th June and they are just covering themselves a little, however in my experience Apple ship dates have been pretty accurate so I am thinking the initial launch day shipments have gone and I can expect shipment a week later. Who knows on this one. Finally the warranty will be an EU warranty, I am currently trying to find out if it is possible to transfer the warranty to AU/NZ, I will update post if I hear anything but I would personally purchase on the assumption you are on your own if anything goes wrong. One final thing, if you don’t have any UK people to help you out with an order, France and Canada are also doing these SIM free and unlocked. Hope that helps anybody thinking about it. Anybody else bit the bullet and ordered ??

Do we know for sure that its being released here on 24th July? Also has there been anything in NZ about pre-orders yet as i fly out of the country the first weekend of August for my OE and would prefer to buy an iphone 4 before i leave, Although the post above me says that Canada are offering ‘SIM free’ iphones aswell and thats where im going so maybe its not that important :)

  4. Paul says:

@ mickstanz: Norhing on NZ pre orders or release date yet. Personally I think the popularity of the device will push it out into August for the rest of the world. Having said that it could be released here good as gold sometime in July, there is just no way of knowing with Apple. If you are going to Canada for your OE I would try and pick one up there unlocked. At least you will have full warranty from country of purchase.

I have put a *request* in for an iPhone 4, Dock and Bumper… I’ll find out in this evening (UK morning) if I am getting them. If I could use my Credit Card on the UK store then it would be done already.

It’s the new iPhone 4 dock which ships separately. You don’t get one in the box.

I note the universal dock (the old one) says it is compatible with the Iphone 4 so wonder if the Iphone ships with the adapter (little plastic bit)? Given they now sell a standalone “Iphone 4 dock” perhaps they dont ship the adapter but seems odd as why make the Iphone 4 dock which is not compatible with any other phone (it says that) yet offer another dock that caters for the full range??

  10. Daniel Burgess says:

They also sell an iPhone 3G Dock separately, which only fits the 3G and 3GS (same form factor) and the 3G/3GS didn’t come with an adapter for the Universal dock.

You can purchase the 3G Universal Dock adapters separately for $17NZ so I would assume when the iPhone 4 dock adapter comes out it will be the same price (it is on the UK store).

  11. Yaman_NZ says:

I never used my dock as I never really saw any reason for it… I would have preordered through a friend but the fact that it’s only the black one makes me choose to wait.

  12. Daniel Burgess says:

@ ant: the 3G, 3GS and iPhone 4 warranties all have this clause…

Apple may restrict service to the country where Apple or its Authorized Distributors originally sold the hardware product

It’s just a risk that you may not be covered if Apple decide they don’t want to cover you.

  14. Steve Lawrence says:

@ lakeview01: hmmmm I’d imagine that your order would simply be held until the white model is available. I’d get in touch with them if I were you otherwise you could be in for a long wait….

  15. Joe Bunting says:

just a question, can i use my westpac visa card to pay on the UK Apple store and enter my cousins address in the UK for the billing & Shipping address or do i need o use a UK Credit card? cheers

  19. ant says:

Dan are you sure about the warranty? I've always thought that Apple 1 year limited warranties are internationally based as long as it can be serviced in the country you are in.

While it is not explicitly said it seems like it is covered internationally

    http://images.apple.com/legal/warranty/docs/iPhon…

"Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable products and parts that comply with local standards. Service options are subject to change at any time. You may be responsible for shipping and handling charges if the product cannot be serviced in the country in which service is requested. If you seek service in a country that is not the country of original purchase, you will comply with all applicable import and export laws and regulations and be responsible for all custom duties, V.A.T. and other associated taxes and charges. available, Apple may repair or exchange defective products and parts with comparable products and parts that comply with local standards."

From what I know the iPhone 3G and 3GS warranties were both international so I don't see why this would be different!
