iPhone 4 Sales Top 1.7 Million
CUPERTINO, California—June 28, 2010—Apple® today announced that it has sold over 1.7 million of its iPhone® 4 through Saturday, June 26, just three days after its launch on June 24. The new iPhone 4 features FaceTime®, which makes video calling as easy as one tap, and Apple’s new Retina display, the highest resolution display ever built into a phone, resulting in stunning text, images and video.
“This is the most successful product launch in Apple’s history,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “Even so, we apologize to those customers who were turned away because we did not have enough supply.”
iPhone 4 also features a 5 megapixel camera with LED flash, HD 720p video recording, Apple’s A4 processor, a 3-axis gyro and up to 40 percent longer talk time—in a beautiful all-new design of glass and stainless steel that is the thinnest smartphone in the world.
iPhone 4 comes with iOS 4, the newest version of the world’s most advanced mobile operating system, which features Multitasking, Folders, enhanced Mail, deeper Enterprise support and Apple’s new iAd mobile advertising platform.

iPhone 4 is available in the US for a suggested retail price of $199 (US)* for the 16GB model and $299 (US) for the 32GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail and online stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack and Wal-Mart stores. iPhone 4 is also available in the UK, France, Germany and Japan and will be available in an additional 18 countries by the end of July—Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Hong Kong, Ireland, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, New Zealand, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

You’ve got to take these Steve Jobs email reports with a grain of salt but there is this also.

has anybody heard anything official from Vodafone yet?

Delays could of course still happen but I’d say that pretty much confirms the rest of world end of July release date, they would surely have said by now if there was going to delays. Latest ship date on the Apple UK site is estimated at 3 weeks which takes us to almost the rest of the world release date of end of July. If Apple were going to “borrow” rest of the world stock to please the UK and US etc their ship dates would not be 3 weeks.
Fingers crossed!

Still no sign of the iPhone 4 in our online store while it does appear in the other countries (except Aussie) due for release in july. It’s a little concerning but yeah not impressed with Vodafone nz also dropping the ball (after the wwdc conference there were Vodafone reps asking us about the release date on Twitter…good grief). Aussie telcos have pre information set up.

I get the feeling that Apple will release the iPhone 4 here in NZ on schedule, but only a very small number of handsets will be available. Once they are gone (in a matter of hours, if not minutes), they will probably get the “iPhone 4 sells out in NZ” media coverage along with a “ships in XX weeks” as has been the case with the first release countries.
Just my two cents…

For what it worth, family in Canada sent me this link (http://www.iphoneincanada.ca/iphone-news/sources-iphone-4-release-date-in-canada-july-23rd/) regarding a possible Canada iPhone 4 release date…
* Word around the store is a July 23rd launch for the iPhone 4.
* Employees have been asked to start shifts at 7:00AM on that day.
* No one is allowed to book time off on that day.

Sounds plausible – the release date of the 3GS here was also on a Friday. Fingers crossed.

I still find it very hard to believe Apple would continue with their planned release dates for other countries when they still have customers waiting in the USA. Surely it will be like the ipad and be pushed back. There will be a huge out cry by Americans if Apple sends devices overseas and leaves their country still waiting.

@ camtab:
Interesting point – I checked out Canada and Belgium at random and while the iPhone 4 does show up there as 'coming soon' there is no pre-order available so no extra functionality. My guess is that for some reason Aussie / NZ has a number of 3GS 16GB / 32GBs left to shift, so they are still trying to push that in the store rather than remind people a newer model is coming. I note the Canada / Belgian stores only have the new 8GB 3GS.

on the Aus site too. I reckon we may see something soon? Not apples style to have an unavailable status for longer than a few hours/days? Apple store pre-order before crappy Vodafone even make an announcement? What are the chances?

I'm hopeful. That's quite a good point, Apple wouldn't like their stock being seen like that!

The iPad is different – it's a standalone device that Apple sells direct to the end user. The iPhone involves another party – the carriers. If Apple have already set a go-live date with carriers all around the world then they are kind of obligated to stick by that date as the "official" carriers will have had marketing campaigns, pre-orders, all sorts of things ready for a specific date which would be a pretty big upset if Apple came along and pulled the plug at the last minute. Also, if companies like Vodafone NZ have ordered x number of units from Apple, then those units will be ring-fenced to them regardless of the situation in other countries. Apple couldn't just say to Vodafone NZ: "hey, you know those iPhones you ordered from us? Well you can't have them because we're giving them to AT&T."

The NZ Apple store now has the iPhone 4 with “Coming Soon” similar to the other July release countries…
