Heads-up: Our bundles don’t work on iPhone iOS 4… yet

Bugger.

This is a heads-up to let you all know that our carrier bundles don’t work with iPhone OS 4 right now. To be super-clear: iPhone OS 4 isn’t out yet, but a beta (preview) version of it is out for registered Apple developers. We haven’t had the chance to install it ourselves yet but reader simonwhite has and unfortunately he has advised that the carrier bundles don’t work with it. So: if you need our carrier bundles working, do not install the preview of OS 4 yet.

We’re updating our iPhones today and needless to say, it looks like we have a few coffee-fuelled nights ahead of us to get this thing working again but the good news is the public release of this is at least a few months away (probably July if previous years are anything to go by). We’ll keep you posted on progress, but bear in mind that until the final release is out we still won’t know for sure if we’ve done it. Until then: continue to enjoy OS 3.1.3 with fully-working bundles!

Hopefully they can be fixed :) . I wonder if tethering still works for XT (no carrier bundle).

Thanks simon but we’ve got it up and running at this end now.

Tethering a bonus…voicemail working would be ideal and carrier logo. Do your best lads…you have done us proud so far. I have installed the beta OS4 and pretty impressed so far expect the Game Centre crashed my phone so not pushing that button again..anyone else had that issue? Also wallpapers only work if selected via the wallpaper settings section…mine wouldnt stay put if selected via the photos section

  6. Daniel Burgess says:

Hmm the wallpaper issue isn’t affecting me? Are you setting via settings or through the photos app?

No issue for Game Center…. should be “centre” but it’s a product name :@

Through settings it works well.,..through photo app it says it has set the wallpaper but when you come out of it the old paper is still there. No dramas as it is a Beta and have found a few things laggy…camera zoom only works sometimes and the photos are colored funny. You found any issues with yours?..could be that I need to install again?

Really not seeing the point of the multitasking feature after using it. Seems more like ‘recently used apps’ to me as most of them seem to have to re-open or re-load when you select them. For example, you search for an app in the App Store, then switch to another app, then back to the App store. The App store takes a second or so to appear and then gives you the spinning wheel while it searches again, so it’s definitely not just sat in the background. Also a MAJOR issue as far as I’m concerned — unless I’m missing something there is now no way to bring up the quick iPod controls. In OS 3.x I had double-tap set to bring up iPod controls which overlay play / skip / pause / volume over whatever app you currently have open. Now, double-tap opens up multitasking and choosing the iPod app takes you out of your current app and into the iPod app proper, which is a bit sh*t really. Disappointed. Don’t want it. Please give us a setting to disable multitasking!! :(

    @ Steve:

I think you have missed the point. Like all things Apple, they have taken the lead with multitasking and provided a new approach to this engineering problem and come up with a relatively good design.

My limited understanding of the implementation to date is that they have introduced the equivilent of windows services running in the background. (voice, voip, sound, local notifications etc…) which do run in the background. apps can then build to utilise these services (subscribe) and come alive when something happens.

I believe apps are still suspended when they are no longer in the foreground, however (and this is different from previous versions of the OS) the apps state is hydrated to the device. When it gets the foreground its satte is restored and the app can resume. (Similiar to windows phone 7) This would be why there is an initial delay of 1 to 2 seconds when the app is brought back into the foreground. I think it is a nice comprimise from their exsiting model. It allows for a richer set of applications to be developed and utilised without comprimising the battery life and stability of the device.

    @ jasonhnz:
I understand where you’re coming from, but here is the end result to the user: A confusing sliding dock full of apps they’ve recently used for little apparent benefit. If you’ve used the phone app recently, it’s there too. Why?

Here’s the acid test: Could you explain it to your mother? Up to now, I could have explained almost everything the iPhone does to my mum. I wouldn’t know where to begin with this. The learning curve just went rather steep and that’s not what the iPhone should be about.

Couple that with the loss of key functions such as iPod controls as mentioned in my previous comment and you’ll see where I’m coming from, too.

  12. Steve Lawrence says:

    @ jasonhnz:
One more thing – this doesn’t magically suspend apps when they’re not in the foreground either, there is some coding required from the dev to make that happen. For example, right now if we jump in-and-out of our iPhonewzealand app using the multitasking, it loads from scratch every time.

Totally get the background processes thing, but that still could have been implemented with the existing UI. After all, the built-in apps such as mail and safari have been able to multitask just fine right up until now. So I just don’t know why we need this new UI that exists only to give the illusion of multitasking to the hardcore of geeks that have been demanding it. For the everyday user, it’s a fail so far.

Any chance we could just get a quick list of what does and doesn’t work on XT with the new software?

I know I lose tethering, not an issue for me at the moment.

Can I configure MMS to work by putting in the settings manually?

Thanks – I guess you guys will be getting to this soon.

Anyone willing to share one of their 100 UUIDs so I can test the limitations on the 3g?

  15. Daniel Burgess says:

@smw as simonwhite said it is just tethering and voicemail button that don’t currently work, however hopefully we can sort that out by the time the OS is released to the general public.

I have to say that personally OS 4 has ruined my love for my iPhone. I still like it but I am not in love with it anymore.

Yes I understand this is a beta, but the “multitasking” (or app switcher as I like to call it) is probably not going to change a lot, and that for me has ruined the device. Strong words I know but it is very poorly implemented in my opinion. The fact that it adds apps that inherently run in the background like the phone, mail and clock etc is just a waste of time. There is no need for it. It really is a case of it being an app switcher and if the developer has happened to code it for OS 4 then it will hold it’s current state.

What would have been wrong with a setting that says to run apps in the background “on/off” and then if on when you close an app with a tap it closes the app and if you want to run it in the background press and hold. Easy. This at the moment is messy.

Once you update to 4.0 you can’t go back, think carefully before you do it.

One question Steve are you a mac or PC user?

    (simonwhite has made 41 comments)

  20. Daniel Burgess says:

@ simonwhite: We’re both Mac users, why’s that?

I agree with Steve, there is some really great stuff in this update, Folders is fantastic and works really well and the speed difference between transitions is definitely welcome.

I am just hoping that with this being the first beta the “multitasking” will get better. I will persevere with it and I am hoping that I will come to like it.

I assume that not being able to switch your home screen back to the default is a bug that will be ironed out.
