Heads-up: Our bundles don’t work on iPhone iOS 4… yet

Bugger.

This is a heads-up to let you all know that our carrier bundles don’t work with iPhone OS 4 right now. To be super-clear: iPhone OS 4 isn’t out yet, but a beta (preview) version of it is out for registered Apple developers. We haven’t had the chance to install it ourselves yet but reader simonwhite has and unfortunately he has advised that the carrier bundles don’t work with it. So: if you need our carrier bundles working, do not install the preview of OS 4 yet.

We’re updating our iPhones today and needless to say, it looks like we have a few coffee-fuelled nights ahead of us to get this thing working again but the good news is the public release of this is at least a few months away (probably July if previous years are anything to go by). We’ll keep you posted on progress, but bear in mind that until the final release is out we still won’t know for sure if we’ve done it. Until then: continue to enjoy OS 3.1.3 with fully-working bundles!

I am seeing a lot of unused screen real-estate in the multitasking screen – there's the dock and then above it just rows of 'ghost' icons from your homescreen. I'm thinking that's where Apple could maybe put the iPod controls.

Must say… loving the folders, and liking the zoom implementation for the still camera. Haven't had a chance to study the results of a zoomed picture up-close yet, though. Probably not great but that's digital zoom for you. Great that Apple added it though. Click-to-focus for video is a welcome addition.

Very much looking forward to iBooks.Love the new transition animation when the icons appear and disappear from the homescreen. Also noticed some subtle changes to the built-in app icons. The 'gloss' effect seems more pronounced and they somehow seem more… colourful?

The jury's out on unified inbox. I find it a bit confusing – perhaps some colour-coding wouldn't go amiss here so it's crystal clear which inbox each message is actually from.

Once you update to 4.0 you can’t go back, think carefully before you do it.

You can if you put it in restore mode, just made the trip to 4.0->3.1.3->4.0

I tried making this trip and 2 hours later and much stressin that I had bricked my phone I was back at 4.0 unable to get 3.1.3 to restore. What was the process you followed

    @ Dan:

if they didn't put mail into the bar how would you switch from from iBooks for example to mail and then back.

The mail app on my mac runs in the background all the time but I would still be screwed if it wasn't on the dock.

I can understand mail and SMS but phone, clock etc is stupid. The phone app as we all know can already keep going in the background while we do other things.

You need to put your phone in a proper restore mode, not just DFU. Google is your friend there.

When you add an IMAP-based email account (including MobileMe and Gmail) to iPhone 4.0, in addition to the previous options you now get a toggle for “Sync Notes”.

I have a developer account. Did you just need to do the option restore trick after starting up in DFU mode, or did you also need the irecovery tool?

    Thanks.

Still a no go, have tried a few different things but it would seem that OS 4 may use a different structure. We will keep working on it but it is unlikely you will hear from us until we have some news.

Yeah, I just found that out, Ouch! But doesn’t bother me as last time I Tethered my iPhone to my computer Telecom returned to me saying I just downloaded 149MB, which is bull. Ha. I can’t wait till the new IPCC files for Telecom XT is released.

We are still looking at this. However, chances are that if we get it working now everything could change again by the time the beta has gone through the several more revisions between the current release and the final release, so we probably won’t make any announcement until OS4 goes live.

  14. camtab says:

I take it no progress on the IPCC files? Sorry I wont hound…just really keen to hear how its getting on more so for the eventual release of the OS4 to the public but also for us running the Beta OS in the interim. I leave you guys to it..keep up the good word
