iOS 4.2 beta for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch available now

iOS 4.2 beta available now

That’s right folks, go get it…. The first iOS 4.2 beta is available for all you eager devs out there and is available for iPad, iPhone 3G / 3GS / 4, iPod touch 2nd / 3rd / 4th gen.
We haven’t had a chance to install it ourselves but continue reading to see what others have found.

The update is mainly for the iPad and the additions to the iPhone and iPod touch just seem to be AirPlay and AirPrint.

APN settings are missing (click to enlarge)

The first and most important thing is that there is no longer an option to change the APN, what does this mean? Well if you are on XT, 2degrees, Telstra or another non-official provider, and you require the use of 3G, then at this stage I would recommend staying away from the first beta. then you will need to use our mobile configs that are available from the links at the bottom of the post.

We are picking that this is only because it is beta 1 and the chances are it’ll go back to normal in a future beta (hopefully beta 2), after all devs on ‘other’ carriers need to do testing. Also it seems highly unlikely it will be a permanent change as Apple are selling them via stores to anyone, no matter the carrier:

Does iPad work with any SIM card or carrier worldwide?
iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G models use a micro-SIM card available from carriers offering 3G data plans for iPad. Check with your local carriers to see if they offer plans

If you use a Vodafone SIM card then an update carrier bundle is available for install.

Next up is the orientation lock switch is no longer that, it is now a mute switch as per the iPhone and iPod touch. Whilst this change brings it into line with the other iOS devices I used to like the switch being there and used it a lot.

Printing now available

AirPrint and Airplay, you can now print from your iPad and it looks as though this change is coming for all iOS devices. There are a few caveats at the moment such as only being able to print to certain printers without the need for a PC or Mac and a couple of other little things that shouldn’t be present in the main release.

Clearly the other big changes are Folders, MultiTasking and Game Center…. shots of which are in the Gallery below.

Got the update? Tell us what you reckon in the comments below….

@ camtab: We’re just going to test it now…. leave it with us

  2. Daniel Burgess says:

@ camtab: I installed it prior to updating and it didn’t work, I re-installed it and it is fine.

Now it could be that it needed to activate cellular data in someway. I say that as I put my Vodafone SIM in it to download the mobileconfig. Once downloaded it worked fine.

So I guess I would check that it was installed *after* you updated, if so and it still doesn’t work you may need to put a Vodafone SIM in it just to get it to activate in some way.

Also check the mobileconfig to make sure the name shows the APN as per the image below (initially mine didn’t):

  3. Daniel Burgess says:

@ camtab: It is very odd. Yes it shows as “not verified”. Paul has also tried it and it works fine for him.
Can I suggest trying the one from http://www.unlockit.co.nz and see if you have any success with that.

Sent reply to twitter but can write more here. I installed the beta on my ipad without any idea it would kill my 3G ability…doh!! I installed your apn changer but it doesn’t appear to have worked for telecom at least. Anyone else tried it?

    No luck….???

Does your profile say “not verified” under the settings section? I tried downloading it via a Vodafone sim ( to ensure 3G was activated) but once I put the XT sim in I lose connection again.

I had already installed the beta 4.2 before I tried to install the apn changer and the APN is showing as per your screen shot.

    Very odd

    @ Camtab

    1. insert voda SIM and make sure working over 3G
    2. Switch on WIFI
    3. Remove Voda SIM
    4. Insert XT 3G SIM and download this APN from iPhonewZeland over WIFI
    5. Switch off WIFI

Your XT SIM should be good to go now……..Hopefully

The APN really needs to be downloaded over WIFI with the non working XT SIM inserted so it can be applied to that SIM once you turn WIFI off, You mentioned above you were trying to download the XT APN with a voda SIM installed – I don’t think this will work.

I have sent you a DM on Twitter for another method ( unlockit.co.nz ) which also works but the above should work I have done it today myself.

Ok guys….you are looking at a total muppet (now I know how a certain Vodafone NZ head huncho must feel every day hahahah) I didnt have any credit on the sim!!! Apparently you just get the standard “no network” error but if you goto XT’s portal you can still access that and hello…$0. What a fool.

I can confirm that it is working once I put some money on.

Your assistance and advice was greatly appreciated (hanging head in shame)

I went into iTunes 10 and It didn’t want to update my iPad 3G do you now what’s wrong?

  9. Paul says:

    @mikemike690

This is only BETA software only for registered developers. The usual “Check for updates” in iTunes won’t show any updates.

    General public release is November.

Anyone installed the Beta on their Ipad (or maybe even Iphone) and managed to get AirPrint working? I installed the beta version of Snow Leopard as well (as advised) but it still doesnt find the network printer. No doubt a beta “bug” but figured would ask if anyone had made it work

  12. Daniel Burgess says:

@ cycloptera: If you go to http://www.unlockit.co.nz you can make a custom config file if they don’t have the one you need.

  13. camtab says:

Has anyone installed beta 4.2 on their iphone (3GS or 4)? I am curious to know if the APN access has been removed on that as well or just the iPad. Ipad only needs the internet APN changed which is easy to do with the webapps but the Iphone needs the MMS and Tethering changed as well so dont want to install 4.2 without knowing it wont kill my access to change the APN to XT’s. Anyone able to confirm?

I ask as they have found other features added to the Iphone iOS 4.2 some detailed here on an overseas site http://tinyurl.com/2clkrrh

  14. camtab says:

I can confirm it DOES kill the “Cellular Data Network” option on the iphone (luckily I tried on my old 3GS) and therefore you cant change the APN to allow MMS, Data or Tethering for any carrier other than Vodafone. As Dan pointed out, lets hope this is just a Beta 1 “error” and fixed by public release

  15. Daniel Burgess says:

@ camtab: Awesome thanks Cam, I thought it would but nice to have it confirmed.

  16. camtab says:

Just as a bit of an update on the APN issue, I have logged a developers bug report and heard back that it is now a ‘known bug’ by the team so hopefully does mean they will fix it (as opposed to it being intentional).

I actually managed to find some software that allowed me to amend the appropriate plist file (without jailbreaking) and assign the tethering, mms and data APN the right type-mask and can confirm I have an
iPhone running iOS 4.2 that has 3G data on XT and mms and tethering. Should the release version of 4.2 not have the access then I will type up instructions on how to make it work
