Update installed, no difference noticed! My wifi hasn’t been an issue and I would love to connect it to a projector but people are charging crazy prices over here for that piece of kit!

So this fix does work – The iPad I had for a day – is now up and running in the hands of the original owner. Needless to say, I won't be buying it back. I have no use for it. iPhone 4 all the way for me!

My iPad crashed right at the end of the upgrade. Unknown error 1104. Can’t restore either. It was not a jail broken device. Very disappointing.

If you’re after a reasonable brand new VGA adapter, got one for sale for $70 + shipping? DM me if you’re keen.

Does anyone know if an ipad is brought off Trademe with a warranty and it was originally brought in the US, if something goes wrong with it, does it have to be sent back to the US for the warranty or can it returned to a local store?

Right, have done a little bit of research. Getting sick of waiting to hear from Apple about the release date for the ipad.

My main concern with buying an ipad from Trademe or imported from Aussie was the warranty cover should anything go wrong (heaven forbid). After a lengthly time on the phone to Apple and several customer support staff later, an Apple representative was able to explain this:

    1. An ipad brought from the original end user, i.e someone buying an ipad off Trademe will be protected by their limited 12 month warranty and 90 day complimentary telephone technical support from the date of purchase.

The key point there is "date of purchase". That is, the date the product is brought online or in store. I know after asking sellers on Trademe, some people believe the 12 month warranty starts when the ipad is first activated. This is simply not true.

If a buyer purchased an ipad in the US for example on 20 May and returns to NZ to sell it, the warranty starts from 20 May, not when it is unpackaged and activated.

    2. Now if there is a warranty issue, the product has to be sent back to the country of origin. So if an ipad is brought to NZ from the US and the battery dies, it has to be sent back to the US for repairs or replacement.

    3. A way around this is to purchase an Applecare Protection Plan, which extends the warranty life for 2 years including the telephone technical support assistance. The beauty of this is that the plan can be transfered into another person's name, i.e another buyer and it also has 'global repair coverage'.

This means the ipad imported from the US can now be repaired at the nearest local repairer instead of having to be shipped back to the other side of the world!

    4. Great! except Apple NZ doesn't offer the Applecare Protection Plan for the ipad since it is not officially sold here…yet. If you are really desperate, you can purchase the extended warranty for the ipad from the US store if you have an account. They are currently being sold for $99 US (about $140 NZD).

Another option is to wait until the Apple NZ store does sell them. You can purchase an Applecare Protection Plan at any stage during the original 12 month warranty. So you could wait another six months before buying it and still be covered for an extended 12 months.

It may seem like a lot of effort but with electronic devices such as these a warranty is a real must. It would really suck to buy an ipad off Trademe to discover the battery dies six months later and it has to be shipped to the US or something goes wrong (as they inevitably do) the day after the 12 month warranty runs out.

Hopefully Apple NZ will announce the ipad release date this week so we can be spared from this headache. But if they don't and you really want to buy one then…………………….
