iPad 3G unboxing, setup and creating your MicroSIM [video]

iPad 3G

At the weekend our iPad 3G arrived, so we thought we’d do a quick video of us unboxing it, creating the MicroSIM from a standard SIM and installing the carrier bundle.

Video after the break.

Excellent work. I have cut a few Micro Sims using your template and I thought I had it down packed but you made it look so easy!! I often need to file some edges. Keep up the great site team!!

    Great work Dan

    A couple of points:
If you want to practice you can get dud sims from Leading Edge (XT retailer) if you ask nicely. They still show carriers so you know if you got it right. But as Camtab says, you make it look easy!

Secondly, it’s worth noting if you have an iPhone, do a back up of it b4 you do anything so when you plug the iPad in you can do a “restore” from your iPhone settings and get all your apps/data installed etc in one go.

@ Richard: Great tip, thanks Richard.

It never occurred to me to do a backup from my iPhone on to it. I know that when I first set up my Wi-Fi it asked me if I wanted to restore from an iPhone backup, but I thought that was just a 'bug' and didn't think it would let me actually do it, so I set it up manually originally.

Because I have since backed up my Wi-Fi when I set up the 3G I could just restore from one of those backups.

Finally received my 3G ipad from Australia and setup as per instructions here. Used your XT Carrier File with my own tweek of the logo and love it. Bring on the OS4 Carrier Files…i know…harder than OS3 to create so no pressure, just indicating the complete ease of install and setup they provide. You have done all Iphone NZ Users a great service

Dan, I could be wrong but I believe the Aussie Prongs are exactly the same as NZ ones. I have the Aussie Ipad and I cant see any difference in the plug from any nz plugs I own. I just plugged it straight into the wall outlet so hope its the same haha

Great site with a heap of great information! Just want to confirm, if I get a 3G iPad from Australia, will it be identical to a 3G iPad I'd buy in New Zealand when they become available in July?

  9. Daniel Burgess says:

@ mal3volent: Yes it will be, with the exception of the power adapter. The removable prongs will be Aussie ones not NZ ones

@ camtab: OH. never knew that, even better then :D

I have a V2 xt sim card and im not sure if the template will work as the actual chip on the sim card i have is very close to the side of the card, kinda off centre.

If i were to use the template i reckon id cut through the side of the chip.

Actually guess what?… Instead of going and looking for a template bla bla bla for your MicroSIM card, you know what I did??
You know how the Vodafone MicroSIM comes in a normal size SIM frame already? I cut my micro SIM out of the frame, inserted micro SIM into iPhone 4, then I used the normal SIM size frame to use my 2Degrees MicroSIM in my old SE W900i phone which takes normal size SIM… didn’t even need cellotape, but you may need it depending on how your SIM tray is structured. Works like a charm :-) @ housecat:

Actually I nearly threw away the frame after I took out my VF microSIM card, but decided to keep it and throw it away later… glad i didn't throw it away! :-)
