NZ launch delayed
Well, this is turning into one rollercoaster ride. Since the initial excitement of the announcement we’ve been through lows and highs and here we are back on a bit of a downer again. Apple has this morning announced that the iPad will be available in the US from April 3rd, and some international territories in late April, but alas New Zealand is not among those locations which are Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Spain, Switzerland and the UK. Additional countries (of which we would hope we are one!) are scheduled to get the iPad ‘later this year’. Check out the full press release from Cupertino after the ‘read more’ link, and be sure to tell us what you think about this news and where you might be planning a special iPad-purchasing holiday to in the comments.

“iPad is something completely new,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “We’re excited for customers to get their hands on this magical and revolutionary product and connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before.”
Starting at just $499, iPad lets users browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more. iPad is just 0.5 inches thick and weighs just 1.5 pounds-thinner and lighter than any laptop or netbook-and delivers battery life of up to 10 hours.*

Developers are already creating exciting new apps designed for iPad that take advantage of its Multi-Touch interface, large screen and high-quality graphics.
The new iBooks app for iPad includes Apple’s new iBookstore, the best way to browse, buy and read books on a mobile product. The iBookstore will feature books from the New York Times Best Seller list from both major and independent publishers, including Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Macmillan Publishers, Penguin Group and Simon & Schuster.
The iTunes® Store gives iPad users access to the world’s most popular online music, TV and movie store with a catalog of over 12 million songs, over 55,000 TV episodes and over 8,500 films including over 2,500 in stunning high definition. Apple ignited the personal computer revolution in the 1970s with the Apple II and reinvented the personal computer in the 1980s with the Macintosh. Today, Apple continues to lead the industry in innovation with its award-winning computers, OS X operating system and iLife and professional applications. Apple is also spearheading the digital media revolution with its iPod portable music and video players and iTunes online store, and has entered the mobile phone market with its revolutionary iPhone.
Thanks to those who tipped us off about this

I wasn't very happy about the delay at first but then thought about it a little more….
- By not getting it at launch any original bugs will 'hopefully' be sorted.
- The iPhone sucked at launch due to lack of content (apps), so the ipad should be a bit more feature filled by the time we get it.
- Hopefully some smart Asian cookies have developed a 3rd part micro sim adaptor for the iPhone by the time we get it so people buying the 3g version don't have to pay for two data constacts.
Those are the things I'm reminding myself of to stop me being upset that I have to live with my MacBook for another weee while.

Not even sure if its needed but once the 3G model is released in NZ..I assume with Vodafone…will it be easy to create an XT Carrier Pack like you have for the Iphone. Guess we dont need voicemail fixed but the APN’s and Logo would be great. Do you see any issues with creating one or see a reason why it would/wouldnt be a good idea? Guess its a wait and see but cant bare the thought of having this awesome product crippled by Vodafones lack of nationwide 850/2100mhz coverage

The iPad is not restricted by Carrier, it is only restricted by the Micro SIM. The iPad will be globally unlocked and Apple have stated this.
If your mobile provider can supply you with a Micro SIM then you will be able to use it on their network.
We have asked all three major providers if they will be introducing Micro SIM’s and they have all declined to comment.

I’m fairly sure Vodafone have openly said they have Micro SIM’s.

Great work Mak..your tweets are restricted so cant see what you asked but assume it was asking if Vodafone have Micro Sims. Anyone know if they will supply Sim only packs…to allow an imported Ipad to be used on the Vodafone Network by inserting appropriate sim

Heh, didn’t think about the privacy thing. Your assumption was correct.
