iPhone 4 and the TomTom car kit

TomTom Car Kit and iPhone 4

Why are we looking at the TomTom Car Kit after all this time? Well, there are two scenarios we’re looking at here: firstly, there are those of you who bought the TomTom car kit for your 3G / 3GS and are now switching to an iPhone 4, and then there are those of you that are considering buying it now. Either way, there are things you need to be aware of and you’ll want to watch the video after the break which will guide you on setting-up the TomTom car kit for your iPhone 4. Go on – hit the ‘read more’!

Some of you may have seen this around already but the TomTom car kit for the iPhone does not work out-of-the-box with the iPhone 4. Unfortunately, it was designed with the 3G and 3GS in mind and clearly TomTom wouldn’t have known about the 4 at the time of manufacture.

The good news is that with a small strip of velcro you can use your iPhone 4 with it just fine. As you can see in the video below the fix is quick, easy and more importantly cheap.

If you have spent $200 on the kit already then spending a few cents on  piece of velcro is probably your best option. If you don’t have the kit then you could get a different holder, or you could get the current TomTom and apply the fix, or you could wait for them to bring out an iPhone 4 model. The latter option hasn’t been confirmed by TomTom. We did ask them if or when we were likely to see a new model and they just replied with the standard “sorry we can’t discuss products that aren’t released yet” (jeez they sound like Apple!).

Either way if you want to buy a car kit hit the links below to see what’s available from Apple.

The software is not included. have to buy it separately for another 95 bux.

And the cheapest stand alone Tomtom GPS is only $198…. That's weird.

Actually it works with iPod touch as well… install tomtom on ipod touch, and use the tomtom kit as a GPS receiver… @ incubus:

This thing is pretty useless for me since I already have an inexpensive holder for my car with an FM tuner and AUX etc.. The only reason I'd shell $200 for this thing is if I couldn't afford to upgrade to an iPhone with built in gps..

Slightly redundant since the only models this car kit is made for both have GPS

I've got one and had it since my iPhone 3G, found it very useful – yes the price is steep but thankfully I got it as a gift :D

I tried that a little while back with a friends iPod touch and it doesn’t work. They’re not thick enough to fit in the iPhone cradle – hence why they also made a cradle for the iPod touch

Hi guys, for those who wants to wear a case with & docks into Tom Tom car kit, try the Incase Snap case. Both Snap case for iPhone 4 or 3G / 3GS they made should fit because they don’t cover the top & bottom edges.
Check it out here : http://www.goincase.com/products/detail/snap-case-cl59630/2
I have ordered one through Apple case program & should be coming in mid Sept.

@ Tam: I have the Incase Snap Case, so I will try it tonight. I currently have a Gecko Profile (which also doesn't cover the top and bottom) and it doesn't fit, so I would be surprised if the Incase does.. It's because of the curved shape of the holder at the top and bottom and becasue the case has a very slight lip which just makes it too small to fit.

@ Tam: Ok so I tested the Incase Snap case and although the iPhone fits in the car kit with it on, it is so tight that you probably wouldn't want to use it with it on.
