Hello, stranger!
It’s been a while, but Apple have just released iPhone OS 3.1.3 which purports to fix inaccurate battery level reporting for the 3GS (let’s hope this means our batteries are actually doing better than we think and not worse) and some other minor bug fixes. We’ll let you know in an update to this post if there is any impact to the carrier bundles, so if you’re with anyone but Vodafone you might want to hold off running the update just for now. We’re updating our iPhones now and checking all facets of the bundle. We’ve heard that tethering should work again but we’ll let you know! Stay tuned!
[UPDATED @06/02 14:30 ] – Tethering now available with our new bundles. Click here to read more
HUGE thanks to user Plamsaglows for providing us with the stock files, without whom we would not have been able to do the testing and HUGE thanks to DBMandrake for providing the solution

Tethering is back!
We can also confirm that blackr1n and redsn0w are broken with this update as it has patched usb comms exploit, so please don’t update if you are Jailbroken.

Would love some tethering action back on Telecom XT. I downgraded to 3.0.1 recently to get it back. Would love to be up to date and be able to tether too! Look forward to your findings.
Just to confirm…to get Tethering with an XT Carrier Bundle..do I need to “restore” the Iphone to the new 3.1.3 and then reinstall the XT Carrier File again? or can I not have the XT Carrier Bundle installed? Sorry probably silly question but just looking for a mini walk through of how to get this all to work again
To get Tethering working right now, you must RESTORE (not update) your phone to 3.1.3 and DO NOT install the carrier file. You should have the normal scrolling TelecomNZ up the top. Tethering will now work.
Our current carrier bundles will work but Tethering will not be available.
We are waiting on a kind owner of an iPhone 3G who could Jailbreak and provide us with the necessary files from inside the device to update our carrier bundles to work. We will keep you updated.
Great news… a good day! I’m guessing that if we restore and then manually add the details above we also need to manually configure the MMS settings and voicemail number? I can follow your manual settings here, but just need to remember the keys to reprogram the voicemail button. Thanks.

Mak you are in Dunedin no? If you I could no doubt cough up my 3g for half a day or so.
I am indeed in Dunedin! Although, I wouldn’t really feel comfortable holding onto such an expensive device. I’d feel horrible if anything happened to it. I also have school just starting now. Either myself, Dan or Steve could walk you through the process over IM/MSN/IRC/E-mail.
redsn0w is on the fly and quite simple to run
.
@ Mak:
Yeh sweet as just email me on my registered email addy and we can work something out.
Don’t think I have access to it (or if I do, I can’t find it).
You can get me on mak[at]mak[dot]geek[dot]nz if you’d like to keep your address private.
FYI the code to enable voicemail button (*5005*86*xxxx#) does not work, unless they changed that in 3.1.3 as well.
So what does that mean? Voicemail isn’t managed by the native phone app?
Yep – I agree. Cannot manually program the Voicemail number here either – although tethering worked a treat!@ Dan (nzbullet):
Email sent mak.
Thanks just replying now. However, I’d hold off until we hear word about this Voicemail issue.
Is the voicemail number able to be set in the carrier bundle once we get it going?
Yes…. The voicemail number is set by the carrier bundle and only by the carrier bundle. You used to be able to type in the code above and it would enable the button but ever since 3.1 (i think) it stopped working and you can now only manage it via the bundle.
@ Mak:
I don’t mind, it not like it’s hard to dial 083210
Just re-injected your XT carrier bundle to my iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3 that had previoudsly had tethering enabled after a restore. The voicemail button is back working, the XT logo is back and tethering has remained enabled! Choice…
So here’s my recap.
1. Backup iPhone updated to 3.1.3 with the XT carrier bundle.
2. Restore iPhone as described above and enable tethering, (You’ll have a scrolling Telecom NZ operator logo)
3. Restore from Back Up (right click on the iphone icon in iTunes and be sure to select the correct back up file) on the iPhone using the back up you made in step 1.
4. Re-install the XT carrier budle available on this site. Voicemail returns, MMS and also tethering is still enabled.
Hope this might help some others.
@ smw:
The option may still be there but are you certain it is working? Sometimes the option remians until you try to actually use it. I am just in the middle of a restore (takes a long time on a pretty full 32GB) so I can’t test.
If it does work then brilliant, but I would still like to update the bundles.
@ Dan (nzbullet): You’re right, the option is there but the functionality isn’t. Sorry to report that.
@ Mak:
Haha, ironic how this site doesn’t endorse jailbreaking (for the record I no longer see the need/jailbreak my phone) requires jailbreaking to create a non-jailbreaking carrier bundle
Dan if you can email me on my registered email address and let me know which files you want off my 3g
Blame Apple for not supporting the most suited NZ carrier for the iPhone.
I get the feeling that Telecom has problems with Apple not the other way around since Aussie has 3 carriers.
Telecom have said they’ve been open to the iPhone but no such proposal was ever made by Apple. Chris Quin confirmed during the XT outage that they were no longer ’seeking’ the iPhone.
Fairly sure if they made enough noise Apple might take notice, sounds like quitting tactics to me.
I don’t think they really care, tbh. There are *a lot* of people who switched their phones to XT.
Yeh I assumed they had given up when they ran that $600 credit offer.
I’ve updated to the latest software update & I cannot use tethering on Vodafone. Any ideas?
Probably best to make a post on the VFNZ Forum, since they’re obliged to help.

Ok folks, this may seem like an odd request but we need to stop the Jailbreak chatter in the comments. Our advertisers don’t like it. Please move discussions on the subject to the appropriate forum.
@ benh:
Have you installed a custom Vodafone bundle?
@dan, I had the custom Vodafone bundle installed but when back to standard carrier to give tethering a try
@ benh:
Did you enter the apn into the tethering field under “Settings>>General>>Network>>Cellular Data”? When you say you did have it installed what did you do to uninstall?
@ Dan (nzbullet): I did a restore….. Sooo I can use the custom vodafone bundle & enter the apn?
No. You should be restored, with no custom bundle installed. Then you enter the APN manually.
After restoring to 3.1.3, if you restore your settings from a backup to get your stuff back on it, it will just reinstall the custom carrier bundle. You need to set it up as a new phone.
@ Dan (nzbullet): is there a link to the factory settings?
Not sure what you mean. The only way to get back to Factory Settings and remove a custom carrier bundle is to restore by hitting the restore button in iTunes. Once you have done that it will ask you if you want to set up your iPhone from a backup or set it up as a new phone. Select set up as new and you are done.
Post Updated
That’s a real shame. I don’t see why Apple would want to restrict it.. when it’s available without a carrier file? They should do a blacklist, not a whitelist.
@ Dan (nzbullet):
Hi dan, restored phone and have tethering option back, is there anyway I can get my contacts, messages and app settings back?
Mak wrote:
It’s a shame but it’s also a win compared to 3.1.2. The user can now choose between two solutions: if tethering is required then instead of using the carrier bundle they use a mobile config file and manually enter MMS settings. The only thing that won’t work is the voicemail button. If tethering isn’t required then users can install the carrier bundle which will enable everything *except* tethering. So there’s a solution for all now, which is great. As Dan says, he will be doing a post with this all laid out in plain English later on today. It’s a good day!
benh wrote:
You will have to do it manually I am afraid. If you restore from a previous backup it will re-add the carrier bundle and you will lose tethering
@ Dan (nzbullet): So I can do another restore and setup as a previos backup or is that too far gone?
@ benh: If you restore and choose to restore from a previous backup, you will not be able to tether. If you want tethering, you can never go back to your backup. You will have to just re-install all your music, apps etc as if it were a brand new phone being setup for the very first time.
@ Steve: right….I’m back to the custom carrier bundle and I have my contacts, apps, app settings & messages back. Now can I keep all of the above settings and data and use tethering? Thanks in advance.
Ben
@ benh: Ben I don’t think you’re quite taking in what we’re saying… you either have the carrier bundle but NO TETHERING… OR… you don’t install the carrier bundle and have tethering. Our latest post on the site explains in more detail. http://www.iphonewzealand.co.nz/2010/all/carrier-bundle-or-tethering-you-decide/#more-3632
FYI restoring from a backup that had the carrier bundle loaded won’t apply the carrier bundle to your phone.
@ Mak: so that means tethering should work?
@ benh:
we have now updated the bundles. You can now tether with the latest version of the bundle. See here
