FYI restoring from a backup that had the carrier bundle loaded won't apply the carrier bundle to your phone.

@ benh: Ben I don’t think you’re quite taking in what we’re saying… you either have the carrier bundle but NO TETHERING… OR… you don’t install the carrier bundle and have tethering. @ Steve: right….I’m back to the custom carrier bundle and I have my contacts, apps, app settings & messages back. Now can I keep all of the above settings and data and use tethering? Thanks in advance.

@ benh: If you restore and choose to restore from a previous backup, you will not be able to tether. If you want tethering, you can never go back to your backup. You will have to just re-install all your music, apps etc as if it were a brand new phone being setup for the very first time.

It’s a shame but it’s also a win compared to 3.1.2. The user can now choose between two solutions: if tethering is required then instead of using the carrier bundle they use a mobile config file and manually enter MMS settings. The only thing that won’t work is the voicemail button. If tethering isn’t required then users can install the carrier bundle which will enable everything *except* tethering. So there’s a solution for all now, which is great. As Dan says, he will be doing a post with this all laid out in plain English later on today. It’s a good day!

That’s a real shame. I don’t see why Apple would want to restrict it.. when it’s available without a carrier file? They should do a blacklist, not a whitelist.

Telecom have said they've been open to the iPhone but no such proposal was ever made by Apple. Chris Quin confirmed during the XT outage that they were no longer 'seeking' the iPhone.

Just re-injected your XT carrier bundle to my iPhone 3GS on 3.1.3 that had previoudsly had tethering enabled after a restore. The voicemail button is back working, the XT logo is back and tethering has remained enabled! Choice…

So here's my recap.

1. Backup iPhone updated to 3.1.3 with the XT carrier bundle.

2. Restore iPhone as described above and enable tethering, (You'll have a scrolling Telecom NZ operator logo)

3. Restore from Back Up (right click on the iphone icon in iTunes and be sure to select the correct back up file) on the iPhone using the back up you made in step 1.

4. Re-install the XT carrier budle available on this site. Voicemail returns, MMS and also tethering is still enabled.

Hope this might help some others.

Just to confirm…to get Tethering with an XT Carrier Bundle..do I need to "restore" the Iphone to the new 3.1.3 and then reinstall the XT Carrier File again? or can I not have the XT Carrier Bundle installed? Sorry probably silly question but just looking for a mini walk through of how to get this all to work again

Would love some tethering action back on Telecom XT. I downgraded to 3.0.1 recently to get it back. Would love to be up to date and be able to tether too! Look forward to your findings.

Not sure what you mean. The only way to get back to Factory Settings and remove a custom carrier bundle is to restore by hitting the restore button in iTunes. Once you have done that it will ask you if you want to set up your iPhone from a backup or set it up as a new phone. Select set up as new and you are done.

No. You should be restored, with no custom bundle installed. Then you enter the APN manually.

After restoring to 3.1.3, if you restore your settings from a backup to get your stuff back on it, it will just reinstall the custom carrier bundle. You need to set it up as a new phone.

The option may still be there but are you certain it is working? Sometimes the option remians until you try to actually use it. I am just in the middle of a restore (takes a long time on a pretty full 32GB) so I can’t test.

If it does work then brilliant, but I would still like to update the bundles.

Yes…. The voicemail number is set by the carrier bundle and only by the carrier bundle. You used to be able to type in the code above and it would enable the button but ever since 3.1 (i think) it stopped working and you can now only manage it via the bundle.

I am indeed in Dunedin! Although, I wouldn’t really feel comfortable holding onto such an expensive device. I’d feel horrible if anything happened to it. I also have school just starting now. Either myself, Dan or Steve could walk you through the process over IM/MSN/IRC/E-mail.
