Introducing our iPhonewzealand: NZ Carrier Settings App

Carrier Settings App by... us

When Apple released iOS 4 and our bundles stopped working we needed a way for you (iPhone users) to get your settings onto your device easily so we created our Carrier Settings WebApp. This was great and provided a quick and easy way for you to get the settings for all the service providers here in New Zealand with some simple copying and pasting. The problem with the WebApp is that to access it you need an internet connection and without the settings you can’t do that…. catch 22. Continue reading to see details of our latest app: NZ Carrier Settings by iPnz (yes Apple made us do the iPnz thing…).

NZ Carrier Settings App

The NZ Carrier Settings app is simply a port of the Web App but with one key difference: you can access all the information contained within it offline. You may be wondering why this would be of any use, after all once you’ve put the settings in they stay there right? Wrong! Unfortunately iOS 4 has a habit of being forgetful AND if you change your SIM card for any reason then you will need to re-apply the settings.

Okay, so you will need an internet connection to download it the first time, but you can install it from iTunes directly, connect to Wi-Fi at home or at a hotspot if you have one around you or you can enter the main internet APN for the carrier and then get the rest of the settings from the app once you have it. The point of this app is more of a backup. Yes, you can use it to initially add the settings, but it’s worth keeping on your device just in case you lose your settings whilst you’re out and about.

The app is simple to use and provides you with step-by-step instructions on what you need to do. We are also in the process of updating the app to adjust the information regarding the voicemail settings (for some carriers you can use the *5005*86*xxx# trick), to enable us to update it remotely (at the moment any updates to settings have to be done via an app update) and to make it a lot easier to copy and paste the settings.

In the meantime go and download the app, you never know when it may come in handy!

With your MMS APN, should it be wap.telecom.co.nz?

I initially tried internet.telecom.co.nz but couldn't send any MMS. Called XT and they told me wap.telecom.co.nz and it has worked fine ever since :)

  4. Daniel Burgess says:

@ mdubsnz: Hmmmm interesting…. I guess it depends on who you talk to and which works for you. I have internet.telecom.co.nz and it works fine, although I believe the normal convention is wap.telecom.co.nz

I actually didn't realise I had put 'internet' so we'll include that in the update as that is what Telecom say to use and what is the norm.

For everyone else: If internet.telecom.co.nz doesn't work for you please use wap.telecom.co.nz (and vice-versa)

This is just what I need as I'm currently travelling over to Oz regularly. But I'm registered on the UK App Store — any chance of making it available there?

Yes, sent one just now. Not a problem. Although I can’t send one from her phone to my iphone. (I think the settings on her phone may not be right). Her’s is an old Sharp sh550.

Totally unrelated to above but does any body have any rumors or info on a new ipod touch release date and or what they think apple might include on a new ipod touch?

Also any news as to when the ibook store will ever open in New Zealand?
