World's best tablet views world's best site!
Yes, my beautiful iPad has finally reached me here in New Zealand. Naturally the first thing I did was get it all nice and comfy following its epic journey, offer it some refreshments and cook it a light meal, then activate it and point it straight at the world’s best New Zealand-based iPhone site. A full review will be up sometime in the next couple of days but I really want to do the article justice by taking some time to actually use it rather than just jump in with nothing but first impressions. Having said that, first impressions are jaw-dropping and I can’t wait to put it through its paces. Goodbye outside world, you won’t be seeing me for a while..!
OK so I know that by now most of you have seen hundreds of unboxing pics, put hey one set more won’t hurt.

Curios! How did you get one? I don’t see them for sale in the Apple NZ Store (only an option to be notified when they are). And if you bought from overseas, how did you get around it being locked to AT&T? Did you need to pay import taxes? What was the total cost?

@k776 — this is an import from the US. The model of iPad that was launched this week is wifi only, nothing to do with cellular. The models that have 3G on-board will be out in a couple of months time (I believe) but even then there is no indication that they will be locked to any network

@ Steve: How much did it cost to get here (including the unit itself)?
(k776 has made 2 comments)
@ k776: Approx $900 NZD
@Steve How many GB is yours?

@ AppleiPhone: I don’t have one myself (boo-hoo) this is Dan’s and it’s a 16GB model.

Oh Cool…..I’m getting 32GB soon

Well done Dan! …but $900 for 16GB? Weren’t you guys dissing Tosh Computers a while back for charging $899? (admittedly they’re now selling the 16GB for $949) but good on them, sounds like they’ve been over run with orders. Be interested to hear if anyone has received theirs via Tosh Computers yet.

you can get a 32GB + a dock for about $900 That’s what I’m getting. About $950 including shipping to NZ.

@ AppleiPhone:
Where can you order that from? And how do you get it shipped to NZ?
(dansmitherson has made 3 comments)
If you have relatives living in USA. If you don’t you can use a US Mail Forwarding system like shipito.com But they charge 10% of the ipad andabout $50 shipping. So a bit over $1000 can get you a 32GB ipad and dock

@ nathstar: That’s not how much I paid, that’s how much it would have cost. I have a generous family. And just to be clear we didn’t diss them, we just pointed out the costs. I said in the article that I would rather wait for official pricing, however I am very, very fortunate.
@ Dan:
Fair enough, you are fortunate! I'm pinning my hopes on 2 different friends traveling to the US next week and Tosh Computers whom are saying we can expect ours at the end of this month, we'll see who comes through first. If I end up with 3 iPads then all the more for my friends

Maybe silly question but figure you will know given you have your Ipad already. Am I correct to assume that the power plug is a US version so all I would need to make it work in NZ is an adapter plug on the end to make the prongs the right type..ie the wattage/volts are all good its just the prongs that are incorrect for NZ? I assume same type of setup as most Apple products so can even “unplug” the US prongs and use a NZ prong plug from the MacBook or similiar (ie the prong part is usually separate and can be interchanged)…does that make sense and will work?

That’s correct, the plug is just like the one yiu get with the iPhone, all thigh apparently it has more power. The idea is the same though, you can just unplug the prongs and plugs the NZ version on the end.
Having said that the adapter part gives more power, and I realise the iPad uses more power, it takes an age to charge and I’ll definitely be getting the separate power adapter.
Excellent..thanks Dan (also thanks for the heads up on the OS4 Carrier Bundles…I will leave you alone now) Keep up the great work

My 32Gb arrived via a friend on Monday – we are loving getting to know it. One of the surprising things so far is that I have been able to use the Kindle app – link out to Amazon.com and purchase ebooks using my regualr Amazon account. As an eReader – this is a very nice piece of kit. The kids think its pretty cool too and use a bunch of the scaled up iPhone apps (they dont seem bothered by the pixel blockiness on the upscaled apps).
