iTunes 10.1 released, support for AirPlay and iOS 4.2 included

Updating iTunes 10.1 with Software Update

Earlier this morning, Apple released the new version of their iTunes software, which now boasts the ability to sync with the new iOS 4.2 due out very soon. Support has also been added for the promised ‘AirPlay’ feature which allows owners of the new Apple TV to stream media from their iTunes library to their TV.

A Mac Rumors report suggests that iOS 4.2 may not come until next week, however this iTunes upgrade is a sure sign it’s on its way.

I have downloaded/updated to the iTunes 10.1 and i assume that the ability to stream movies/video via AirPlay to Apple TV still requires the Apple TV to have 4.2 installed? I can see the AirPlay icon now included when I play a movie but its still only sound that is transmitted. Anyone else actually streamed a video to their Apple TV from their computer (which actually makes no sense as Apple TV connects to your Itunes Library so plays the movies from your computer anyway…”pushing” the content is redundant when it “pulls” the content anyway)

@camtab the only way I can get video on my Apple TV both audio AND visual is to select my MacBook iTunes library from the Apple TV itself. Then I select a movie from my iTunes collection and it plays on the Apple TV – Audio and visual. Between my MacBook and all my idevices this is the ONLY way I can get video to play. I find it very weird how I can get a movie playing this way but when I select the same movie from my MacBook and try and send to the Apple TV the other way it just plays Audio. Guess the ATV update is required.

@camtab Nope still doesn’t work…. well not that I can figure out. The Apple TV settings still only show an option for audio (because there has been no update to ATV yet). I think you are on the right lines though Camtab, ATV needs an update to 4.2 as well.
Although yes the Apple TV pulls the info from your iTunes library, I want to stream from my iPad / iPhone to my Apple TV and that’s where I will use it most.

@ Dan: Oh yeah by all means, Airplay from Ipad/Iphone makes sense but from Itunes its just a “look a new feature”..but a worthless thing as Apple TV and iTunes already talk to each other and plays your movies via Homesharing. Currently I select a movie from my iTunes collection and it plays on the Apple TV via the ATV menu (ATV pulls the content) Enabling AirPlay on itunes just means i still need itunes to be open but I select the movie in it and it pushes the content. Both need the Itunes library to be open on your Mac/PC so it seems silly (to me) to even bother putting AirPlay in iTunes.

But anyways…bring on 4.2 for the ATV so we can stream video from the iOS devices

    @ Yaman_NZ:
You’ve been able to stream photos to the the Apple TV2 since the day it was released… in fact you could even do it to the old Apple TV so this is not a new feature of iTunes 10.1. And yeah the whole streaming video from iTunes thing is kind of the whole point of the article… do you read our articles? Some of them are quite good! ;-)

Does the AirPlay feature show up in the photos app on your iPad for you? Not there for me. I’ve installed the latest GM and it is very stable. No more WiFi issues for me :)

    @ myopinion:
The AirPlay icon will only appear when you have an Apple TV on your LAN, and when you are playing video or music as far as I am aware. Photo sharing is done via iTunes.
