Kiwi App Review: 3 News

3 News

Following on from Lotto NZ, kiwi developers Moa Creative have come up with another app for our viewing pleasure. This time it’s an official app for 3 News. It’s always great to add another local source to our news apps collections as we must keep on top of what is happening at home and in the rest of the world. Keep reading for my take on TV3′s first foray into kiwi appdom…

Unfortunately this app is not optimized for the Retina Display but it still looks good. You can watch any 3 News video right on your iPhone even over 3G (which will obviously incur data usage fees).

It is good to add the 3 News app in addition to the TVNZ app as it gives us multiple perspectives on the news. When you open the app for the first time you will notice that it is strikingly similar to the TVNZ app. It’s unclear whether this is intentional but it’s a good thing for the user, as it means you don’t have to learn a new app.

All the different categories of news are listed along the top of the page and the different sections of the app are along the bottom.

‘TV Shows’ has a list of the latest videos posted on the 3 News website, of three different shows: Campbell Live, 60 Minutes and The Nation. From this tab you can watch any of the videos which work over both WIFI and 3G so you can check up on the news from anywhere. Unfortunately over 3G the videos are of a lower quality which is contrary to the blurb on iTunes which says that you can watch the videos in high quality. However this means you don’t use as much data as you might have, which is always a plus.

If you hit the envelope at the top left of the TV Shows you can send feedback to the show.

The report page is a nice touch. It allows you to submit a story to TV 3 and maybe get it on the news! This is especially nice for those of us with iPhones spending time out and about who might be just in the right place at the right time to catch an event on video and send it to the news.

The last page just allows you to access the full TV3 website.

One thing the app is missing which would have been nice is a TV3 program guide. Hopefully Moa Creative will add this to the next version. As mentioned earlier, the app is not optimized for the Retina Display, so I’d love to see this fixed in the next version, too, hopefully along with higher quality video!

Let us know what you think of the TV 3 app. Maybe suggest what you would like to see included in the app in future updates.

No retina display support? The iPhone 4 was announced early June.

    Looks like a cool app!

Just to correct your article, Canwest no longer owns TV3, MediaWorks (which is owned by Australian company Ironbridge Capital) owns TV3. :)

Post altered in respect of that error (which was mine, not Allan's)

I much prefer this app to TVNZ’s one. The TVNZ app loads so slow over 3G on my iPhone 4.
Also, you talk about the high quality blurb thing on iTunes… Are you saying I canmake YT videos over 3G look better than the rubbish quality they are now? (so pixelated, almost inaudible and unseeable)
