Kiwi App Review (and giveaway): Bird Strike

Bird Strike

Bird Strike

PikPok is another Kiwi development company that is producing some top notch stuff. Today I took a look at their new game ‘Bird Strike‘. Hit the ‘read more’ link to see what I thought and to get the chance to win yourself a copy (we have 3 copies to give away).

The game itself is pretty straight forward and easy to get into. You are simply trying to get Gerald the bird from his perch on a wire up to a UFO way up in the sky and, as someone once said what goes up must come down, he rockets back down to ground where you get to ‘BREAK STUFF!’ and land with a splat.

Ready for take-off!

Whilst soaring through the sky you’ll collect what looks like little golden bird seeds to increase your score, rockets to give you a boost through the sky, crash helmets to break through stuff and umbrellas to help slow you descent. But as always along the way their are obstacles you’ll need to get around. Some that are hard and you’ll need that crash helmet to break and some that you can fly straight through but they will slow you down (clouds, washing hanging on the line etc etc).

Don't hit those steel beams!

There are three locations to unlock (USA, Asia, Europe) with three levels in each and three medal levels (Bronze, Silver, Gold) to achieve. To unlock the next level you will need to achieve at least a bronze. But we all know third place isn’t good enough so you’ll be wanting to get that Gold medal. The latest update also introduces OpenFeint leader boards to the app so you’ll definitely be needing the gold and more to beat the best.

I will get gold on all of them

The graphics and animation are great and whilst fairly simple are really pleasing to the eye as is the audio (to your ear). The cartoony-like feel makes the app really fun to play. When I first opened the app it straight away put a smile on my face because of the fun it brings with things like the UFO zapping Gerald and the animation when he hits the floor after his long decent. I challenge you not to smile at least once when you play the game…… I bet you can’t.

Zap!

It is an easy to pick-up-and-play game ideal for those times when you’re sat outside the upteenth womans clothes shop waiting for your wife to stop abusing the credit card. Or if you let your kids play with your iPhone/iPod Touch then it will be a great fun game for them (my 8 year old loves it).

If I would have to say anything bad about it it would be the shortness of the game and the ease at which I had unlocked all the levels. I would really like to see the developers offer in-app purchases of extra level bundles. Maybe, offer continents with 3 levels in each continent as a bundle. So you would have Africa, Australasia, Antarctica, North America, South America, Asia and Europe, giving you 12 extra levels. Although trying to beat my own high score, or the high score on OpenFeint, is challenging sometimes a change of scenery is nice.

At $2.59 I still say this game is worth every cent just for the sheer fun it brings.
