TVNZ iPad app - its a good 'un!
We reported back in July that TVNZ were developing an iPad app, and it has now arrived. It’s free and comes with the promise of more to come. Does the app carry itself better than TVNZ’s announcement of it? Does it rival the excellent NZ Herald app? Continue reading to see my thoughts on this latest edition.
The video section - video podcasts of news to delight you
The TVNZ iPad app doesn’t differ greatly from the Herald one, it is equally slick and nice to look at. There are five sections: News, Sport, Weather, Schedule and Video. News has different sections from World to Technology. The video section has snippets of news from the ONE news desk. The app also boasts Weather and TV listings schedule which are a great addition. Though the TV listings are only for the TVNZ channels this covers a fair few and works just like a mini mysky planner. There is the information and length of each program and it is great to check what is on TV later on. The weather is broken into different towns and cities and gives you the current weather, the weather for tonight and tomorrow as well as a two day extended forecast and UV index.

An exciting prospect is the talk of further additions to this app. We are told that more features such as live streaming of news and more video will arrive in an update for the app. TVNZ are also said to be working on a TVNZ Ondemand app for the iPad which could be awesome. For now this app rivals the Herald app for my time when eating breakfast, I can highly recommend it and as it is free everyone should get it now!

The iPhone app crashes the first time i access the TV guide then does ok when I open it again.
Still no TVNZondemand sadly… I contacted TVNZ and they said they're only on Flash for now… that was a little while ago but maybe things will change soon

New TVNZ iPad app is not even close to the the Herald app.
Having used the great iPhone version of TVNZ for a while, the iPad version was disappointing as this version provides no additional functionality and actually has less features than iPhone version.
While it fills the full screen of iPad it does not utilize some of the iPad UI design features.
The layout has a lot of wasted space. A large advert for tvnz is not really required when I am already aware of the tvnz iPad app (I am using it). In landscape view, there is little room left for the article itself. Need to read articles in portrait orientation.
In the article list, I miss the short summaries below the article titles and also the time indicators (colour) showing how recent the news is or if updated.
I am unable to use any social media functions that were in the iPhone App. I cannot forward articles or tweet/facebook an article.
Turquoise text on light blue and great is very hard to read on tv guide, and generally looks dreadful. Tv guide now only shows current day where iPhone version allows next couple of days
Some Videos fail to play!
Was this pushed out too early, perhaps rushed after NZ Herald released their app. What happened to onDemand that was mentioned by TVNZ?
