I was worried that I might have somehow accidentally re-signed by accident when I went in to get my MicroSIM in last week. However I checked with the Vodafone NZ Twitter account:

Confused. When I got my @vodafoneNZ MicroSIM last week, does that mean I’ve accidentally re-signed to my plan?

If you’re already on account, you can swap your sim card for free…

But you have to resign to get it?

I got my MicroSIM on Friday. It comes within the normal credit card sized piece of plastic, out of which you can press a regular-sized SIM for putting into your existing iPhone 3G or 3GS. The change is that this regular SIM also has a smaller press-out MicroSIM housed on it, meaning that when your iPhone 4 arrives, you can get out the SIM of the iPhone 3 and press out the Micro-SIM, and place it into your new phone immediately. My iPhone 3G works happily with this hybrid SIM.

Given the likely delays on iPhone launch day around transferring your old-style SIM into a new MicroSIM I’d recommend people do this in the next few weeks to avoid the queues.

I had a talk to my local Vodafone shop – they suggested that I wait until I have my microSIM device, and then come in and see them to get the SIM cards swapped over. They also told me that the microSIMs wouldn't come with any kind of adapter, so I guess that short of buying an adapter, you're out of luck if you ever need to go back to a miniSIM device (e.g. you need to send your iPhone 4 off to get repaired, etc).

I guess I should clarify… There was a discussion on an Australian site regarding the issue of not being able to interchange a micro sim between an iPad and an iPhone 4. It was mentioned that a sim is quote just a tiny bit of circuitry that allows the carrier to identify you and allow your phone to connect to the network and that IMEI limiting isnt easy too do and would cause more issues.

Again, this was just talk at the time on an Australian site about an Australian telco. Personally if I owned an iPad and and iPhone 4, I would probably have two sims. I also doubt very much that there would be any issue moving the same micro sim between an iPad and an iPhone 4.

I went into my local Telecom store and they told me that they don't know if they are getting micro sims, also they mentioned that as none of their phones use micro sims it was possible that they wont have them soon… Tweeted them a few times to with no reply.

Pity, as I thought Telecom in the past encouraged iPhone users to use the XT network. I guess a sharp knife and a steady hand (to cut my existing sim) will be in order sometime in late July when the iPhone 4 comes out (not to mention the iPad 3G).

Not had to tie imeis to sims as they are both unique numbers. Bit whether there will be any valve in of don’t know. But if we follow the Australian model the price of prepaid data would male it reasonable enough to purchase bit we will see.

Don’t think I could be bothered moving sims from one to the other and assuming you’ve just dished out a couple of k for the iTwins (think Devito and Arnie) wouldn’t you want you talk on your iPhone while facebooking on your iPad sitting in the garden bar of your local and considering the current cost of a prepaid 100mb data for $10 a month or $20 for 200mb why wouldn’t buy a sim for each?

I think that the whole sim card tied to data only comes from some overseas telcos selling iPads and data plans where the sim card is somehow tied to the IMEI of the iPad. Word was that Telsta in Australia were considering this.

You probably wont be able to use your iPhone 4 Micro SIM in an iPad – it knows its a data only device and wont work with a SIM set for voice and data. 8(
However I hope the price point is similar to the current 3Gs price. I’m going to give my old 3G to my wife (her prepaid phone is currently kaput) and I’ll grab the iPhone4.
As device consolidation goes, having the higher res camera saves on carrying around another compact camera to supplement my current 8MP SLR (the best camera is the one you have with you), the LED flash is good as a pocket torch, I’t nearly as fast as an iPad, and iOS4 give you access to iBooks, so I don’t really need the iPad unless I want the bigger screen. I might buy a wifi only one for Christmas rather than upgrade my MacMini.

Found it. Telecom announced it on Twitter on 20 April. Said they would let customers know as soon as they received delivery on the new microSIMs.

Just played with the iPhone4 today. WOW what a great piece of hardware. Feels really solid in your hand! Tried my best to reproduce the antenna problem, but glad to say it never lost any bars. People here reckon that it is a USA AT&T issue, will have to wait and see

i am not gonna get a micro sim. whats the point of getting a 3G iPad though? your hardly ever out of the house (except for some bloggers) and, 3G is a bit slower than wifi.
