Sna.pr web service updated
You may remember a while back we took a look at the new kiwi-developed social media service Snapr but when we looked at the app the website hadn’t been completed. Now, 4 months later, the site is finally ready for public use, the app has been updated and they have launched a mobile version of the site at m.sna.pr. Hit the read more for a bit of a tour and to see what’s new in the world of Sna.pr
Firstly a quick re-cap. Snapr is a is a new social media company from New Zealand that brings together geo-tagged images taken on mobile devices and shows them on a map that updates in real time. The Snapr map is an exciting way to see what is going on in a particular place at any time. Being a social media concept it requires user input to make it as great as it can be and reach what I believe has true potential.
Now that the web interface has been released the service can really take off. There are still a couple of missing features with it, including Facebook linking and the ability to add friends, but they are coming. It does include Twitter linking so you can tweet your images directly from the app. This is great but it really does need to include some kind of friend management system, so that I can easily search for my friends’ images and be notified when they post images and comment on them.
One of the discussions I have had about this is how is it different to using Twitter or Facebook and uploading images: well, this is for images and images alone. Think of it as a ‘Visual Twitter’, which is why the ‘friend’ integration is going to be so important. As they say “A picture says a thousand words”.
The site is really well done, nicely laid out and simple to use. You can search for places, people, and tags and sign up to post comments and add images as favourites.
The map is sorted according to time – so when you view an image you see see other images from around that place and time. You can also scroll back through time for a certain spot, or set the map to “now”. By default the map shows the 20 images closest to the current time but you can show up to 100 images at one time.
Have you signed up yet? Why not…. it’s all free, so don’t just tell us what you’re doing why not show us what you’re doing.
