Just go down to Telecom and ask for a new ‘Version 3′ Sim. That will fix the problem. Also, as XT isn’t an official carrier of the iPhone, some basic tweaking (APN settings etc.) should be expected.

What a joke this XT network. I have just loaded the new software in my iphone and now voice mail will not work. Im no IT guy and I have to learn all sorts of it stuff just to get voice mail going………..If our corprate was not XT I would run back to Voda ASAP. no one seems to be able to help. its sunday and I need to be going again tomorrow. What a big joke, but im not laughing

I went into a telecom store in chch and asked to have my V1 sim swapped for a V3. They charged me the 20 bucks even though I had a v1. On their system it said I had already updated my sim in April even though I showed them the v1 sim I have had the since the early days of XT.

Because I was able to show them that the voicemail did indeed not work, they agreed to give me a v3 even if their system said I already had one. They didn't, however, give it for free. Like I said, they charged me the 20 bucks because the iPhone isn't a handset they officially carry.

Just got off the phone with Telecom mobile support. I arranged to have a SIM V3 mailed to me. I’ll let you know when it’s here and how the VM button issue goes.

Hi – saw this post and decided to approach a Telecom store and see what they said. Went in to the Telecom shop on Broadway, Newmarket on Wed and asked about V3 SIMs – the lady in there was adamant these were the MicroSIMs but that there was an upgrade to my old V1 SIM that in her words “has been available since Xmas” – nice of Telecom to tell me. They happily replaced my V1 SIM for no charge and on the invoice I saw the new SIM described as V3! Anyway – new SIM in, voicemail now works! Now all I need is for Telecom (& Vodafone for that matter) to stop charging me for accessing it in addition to my plan!

Just swapped my XT V1 black sim card today to a V3 type in Paraparaumu. So nice to have that voicemail button back in OS4.

Why is Telecom updating SIM cards with the Version 3 SIM Applet?
Version 3 is the latest version of the SIM applet, and provides an improved customer experience while roaming and when operating in fringe coverage areas in NZ. It also addresses Telecom R Series duplicate contacts issues and corrects Blackberry voicemail access issues reported on some handsets.

Just thought I’d provide a quick update.

I have read and re-read the internal document everyone was refering to and it does not mention the Voicemail issue in any way.
This means there is nothing for me to “fix” as the Customer Service Information (CSI) memo is 100% correct
It would seem to me that the source of this discussion has interpreted this document incorrectly.

I can confirm that the V3 SIM card exist in plentiful amounts, according to my local XT store.. I just paid $20 for a new one as I’m told it now fixes the voicemail button.. I’m waiting for my new SIM to be activated, which can take up to 4 hours before plugging in so i will confirm all very soon

And in Steve, Mak and the Team's defense there ALFA..they did get it from two sources as TechBitus.com already took ownership of the announcement themselves and took offense to this site calling it exclusive to them. So yes, this is a blog site and an excellent one at that, but they do stand behind the information they bring us and I for one think they do a sensational job at bringing us Iphone/Iproduct news.

I just picked up a V3 SIM (from the retail store on Willis St, Wellington) at lunchtime, and can confirm that my voicemail button is now working as it should. The chap in the store mentioned that he had about 200 V3 SIMs in stock, so that's the place to go if you want your V3 SIM.

I also went to the store on Lambton Quay, but they only had a few V2 SIMs there, and given Neal's comments above I'm glad I opted to give that a miss.

My old SIM was V1, and the swap to a V3 went smoothly and it was activated on the spot.

I appreciate comments are to cease but I just had to say that I have followed this site now for over a year and never really had need to comment. This sim update/MBDN issue has taken on a life of it’s own and I think IPNZ is being unfairly tarnished because telecom (for some unknown reason) have let slip something they clearly wanted to get done under the radar. Severel XT people have denied the existence of V3 cards, yet its proven they do exist and are available. They release an internal memo that says the voicemail will be fixed by OTA and again go on the defensive saying not true, again it’s proven the memo exists. Something doesn’t add up. Anyways…we all have better things to focus on, NealR can get his team to “fix” the memo that doesn’t exist (or was somehow released without his knowledge) and we will keep our trust in IPNZ to bring us the stories.

Keep up the good work and I for one will be watching is space as I suspect this hasn’t ended (although has on here)

CSI 5377…. call Telecom and ask them to read the first FAQ. They confirmed via Twitter that the Blackberry issue is caused the same as the iPhone issue. This doc confirms that they have said the OTA fixes the Blackberry issue, as Steve said, so therefore safe to say the iPhone issue would be resolved too.

We may have been wrong, and we have changed it. But you don’t see Telecom stepping up and admitting there internal document is incorrect, or if it is correct and does fix the Blackberry issue, admitting that their Tweet info was wrong. With the info we had we had no way of knowing we were wrong (and yes we are being defensive here because our name and reputation is being questioned).

Yup, this is a blog. But I dare say we we’re much better informed than the ‘real’ news outlets in New Zealand that report on tech, especially when it comes to iPhone stuff. Mak wrote this article based on solid information from a source who he felt was reliable. I, too, have actually *seen* the internal memo that went around Telecom saying that the OTA updates fix “blackberry voicemail issues” – and since the same SIM issue affects both Blackberry and iPhone it is clear that the MBDN is what is being referred to. I stand by my comment. If you reproduce something in good faith which then turns out to be 100% incorrect, you’d be sceptical the next time this source provided you with more information. A source can’t be considered reliable when the information they provide turns out to be false and has to be retracted.

I beg to differ…thanks to Mak we finally got some confirmation from Telecom that the V3 cards are out there in the wild. Up until this point all we got was deniability and conflicting stories. NealR is obviously the guy in the know and should know whats right and wrong but I will point out that even he didnt know the V3 sim cards had been released so there is a small (very small) chance he has also missed a memo about the OTA voicemail update. You will note he is VERY specific in repeating himself about “This does not mean we won’t have a plan, it means we currently don’t have a plan”…suggesting a plan in the future

If you are on a V1, you can be upgraded to V2/V3 for free. That is common knowledge. Just wait until your local Telecom retail has V3′s and bowl up and get it replaced.

V2′s need to pay standard replacement fee of $20.

Perhaps NealR could confirm how widespread availability of V3′s are?

If it is only iPhone that is affected then no they don’t have to replace the SIM’s. Telecom don’t sell or support the iPhone so if a feature doesn’t work on it then that is not their issue, regardless of whether it is the SIM that is stopping said feature from working.

Having said that, as Neal said, just because it’s not on their radar right now doesn’t mean it won’t be.

If it’s possible to populate the MBDN field OTA then why wouldn’t it be done? It’s affecting the 10k some iPhone customers on XT and the countless more Blackberry+WinMo users.

Perhaps I can clarify:
Fact: The current Over The Air (OTA) SIM update program, to resolve some known roaming issues, does NOT include an update to the MBDN field
Fact: We currently do not have a plan for an OTA delivery to update the MBDN field. This does not mean we won’t have a plan, it means we currently don’t have a plan.
Fact: The recent batch of SIM’s (known as V3) have the MBDN updated.

MBDN = Mail Box Directory Number

All other information to the contrary, both internal and external to Telecom, is incorrect.

I did not see your story Bryce, I apologise. We were told by a source within Telecom, and since it had not been announced by Telecom and wasn't anywhere in the local NZ geek community it was fairly safe to assume it hadn't been announced. In future, you can contact the authors personally under the 'Contact Us' tab in the navigation.

I am not sure what the story is and don't doubt that is what you were told by telecom but I have all 3 versions in front of me and my V1 is indeed black on the metal contact side, the V2 has a blue/white shade and the V3 is identical. The other side of all 3 is white that has the number written on it. Maybe there is a version 2.5 out there? I can take photos and email them to the team?

Can I suggest you check your source of the OTA update to resolve the VM number as I am unaware of this.

I don't know the technical behind it but as long as the SIM is connected to the network it should be upgraded regardless of device. If it fails to get the update, you'll probably be able to argue at a Telecom retail store that you need the updated software that you weren't able to get OTA and get a V3 for free.
