Three new Mobile Broadband plans from Telecom, available today

Three new Mobile Broadbad offerings

Telecom have quietly rolled out three new Mobile Broadband plans today. This is not just an announcement to announce the announcement, these are available from today and for the heavy mobile data user may just come in handy. Hit the read more for the detail.

The new plans aim to bridge the gap between the current postpaid and prepaid offerings. Prior to today if you were a postpaid customer then there was nothing less than a 2GB plan and for prepaid nothing more than 500MB. This gap has now been filled with the introduction of a 500MB postpaid plan and a 2GB and 4GB prepaid plan.

The prices don’t seem too bad to be fair. They may look expensive but in comparison to what we currently have it’s not *that* bad. For prepaid users you can quadruple your usage from 500MB to 2GB for only double the price. Now that’s not a bad deal. Don’t get me wrong I know mobile data prices are high in this country, but that is still a fair deal under the current pricing options.

Here’s the full break down of the new pricing:

Prepaid

Postpaid

Please note that these are “Mobile Broadband” plans and not “Data Extra’s” which are still available as bolt-ons to your current mobile phone plan. The Mobile Broadband data plans are also available for your phone if you want more data than the Data Extra’s provide.

So with the iPad not to far away (hopefully) and with the possibility of some Telecom MicroSIMs on the horizon, could these be the plans to make you switch? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.

VERY good to see 4GB on prepaid. Am planning on tethering my phone to my laptop at my holiday house where we don’t have internet/phone line. Now all I need to XT reception there…

@ Dan: Oh ok. It’s nice to see that if you are locked into a plan it still costs exactly the same as people on prepaid. Makes me feel all fuzzy about not signing up to a contract

Nail on the head Dan, this is an announcement about a product that is available now and not a Vodafone lame attempt at keeping people interested and hyping things up with pre announcements about possible upcoming announcements.

As far as the plans go the 4GB sticks out to me as great value as my company is currently paying the same price for my 1GB Blackberry plan.

Vodafone will probably soon announce their own new DATA plans and no doubt they will be competitive but again this will only be because they have been backed into a corner and forced to be in line or there abouts with Telecom and 2degrees otherwise they would happily continue with their extortionate iPhone DATA prices.

@ Plamsaglows: The price is the same for prepaid and postpaid if you are on open term postpaid (i.e not locked in) but you get a $10 discount if you lock in on a 24 month contract (not a huge discount but better than nothing). Sorry I should have made that clearer, my bad.

  6. camtab says:

Great article…just a note, the prepay plans details you have there are slightly incorrect. Its $29.95 for the additional 2GB on top of the 2GB or 4GB as per the Telecom site.

Not quite. In the States, AT&T and others have started withdrawing their unlimited plans. We might have to do a comparison post at some point.

Can we see a comparison between the new and old prices. I am failing to see the difference in the prepaid prices besides the additional 4GB plan

  12. Plamsaglows says:

@ deFusion: +1 for that idea but also +1 for the fact it won’t be happening anytime in the foreseeable future. You’re paying for two lots of data now, why would businesses want to reduce what you are paying them….

Useless… that's about the same as Vodafone anyway…

  15. deFusion says:

Oh damm, they should bring out a plan that links your home broadband and your mobile like say you had 10gb u could use that at your home and on your mobile. it would attract new mobile users and new home landline/broadband users

The plans that did have the unlimited label overseas always had the infamous fair use policy anyway. When I left the UK a year ago my "unlimited" mobile DATA had a cap of 750mb per month before extra charges would apply. I'd much prefer to know where I stand and pay for X amount of DATA from the start rather than a complicated unlimited plan with a fair use policy.

Unlimited Home broadband ……Now that's a different story, I had this in the UK and it was truly unlimited and is sorely missed!! :-)

  17. deFusion says:

They shouldnt be able to call it "unlimited" then it should be th 750mb plan, shame on them. Yeah i wish that telstra could make an unlimited home internet plan but then again they would probaly charge to much for it.
