In case you’ve been living under an Apple-proof rock for the last fortnight then you’ll already know that an Apple event is taking place Sept 1st – that’s tomorrow (02/09) 5am NZ time. This time of year is traditionally when Cupertino unveil refreshed iPods, and from the graphic it’s clear that music is at the heart of the event. An updated iPod touch with front-facing camera and FaceTime is almost a certainty, but there are rumours (as usual) that the event could also be used to announce a slew of other goodies including an all-new Apple TV (iTV), cloud-based iTunes, TV show rentals (for the US), iOS 4 for the iPad, and the release date for the white iPhone 4. We want your predictions, so hit the comments and put your stake in the sand!
UPDATE: Apple have just announced that for the first time they will be live streaming the event on the Apple website. So if any of you are going to be up at 5am and were planning on a date with the refresh button, great news! – You can now sit back and watch the whole thing live. Note that PC owners are left in the dark – this will be available on Mac, iPhone, iPod touch and iPad only

@ JimmyC: problem 1 can be solved by converting the podcasts into your mp3 collection. Right click on the podcast and you’ll find the option you need.

I think the fact that they are streaming this keynote (they have never done this) is an indicator that they are going to announce iTunes Streaming. They are probably taking the system for a test run and to show off their streaming technology.
Shame we probably won’t get this in New Zealand. There is no market for this kind of technology here because of our internet caps. The average is around 10-20GB which is no where near enough to stream video content.

Definite – New iPod range, from Shuffle to Touch, complete refresh.
Definite – iPod Touch camera front and back retina display and FaceTime
Definite – Apple TV Refresh
Likely – Some sort of iTunes cloud streaming service announced
Possible – iPhone 4.1 Download – Come and get it
Possible – iPad IOS 4.0 BETA 1 – Come and get it
Long Shot – iPad IOS 4.0 Public release – Come and get it
Not in a million years – New 7inch iPad model
There you go, you heard it hear first
I’ll be up at 5am Tuning in and watching the event live and refreshing the Apple store with iPad and iPhone plugged in just incase.
It’s the last one of the year and this will be the xmas line up so should be good.

@ Paul:
I don’t think you’d call the Apple TV refresh a definite. I wouldn’t be surprised if we see another even next month dedicated to a new Apple TV. I would put it in the “Possible” category.

That’s not possible — can’t have a public release if there’s been no beta for the devs to know how to code for it.
iPod touch to be rebranded iPad Nano
Wireless syncing of all Apple devices in the home. Sort like an extension of home sharing in iTunes.

I could be wrong but doesn’t the iPod touch have ios4 already so putting it on the iPad is exactly the same as far as dev’s are concerned. No beta required (not saying they won’t but what do iPad developers need to test when app switching, multi tasking etc etc works exactly the same as the iPod touch)
I am sure there are a few tweaks the iPad will be able to do over the iPod but for release v1 I doubt they would have to have a beta (but no doubt still will) Just my thoughts

Dear God please let them update desktop iTunes. I only ever use it to syncackup, but when I do it's a contstant battle to keep what I want on my device. Podcast options are so inflexible… it's a dog of an application in that regard.
That, and a release date for iOS4 for iPad and I'll be a happy chap.

@Craig:
This could turn into a long comment, but I have two main issues: I listen to 4-5 different podcasts, some episodes of which I keep permanently on my device as technical reference material. Another, I will listen and delete, and some I want to keep odd episodes out of order.
Problem #1: iTunes will not let you pick and choose exactly which podcasts andor episodes therein that you want to keep. It gives you all these weird and wonderful options for the 3 most recent, 3 most recent new, all unplayed etc but they're global settings for all podcats. I want to choose all episodes of one podcast, 1 episode of this podcast, and 4 of another out of sequence. Can't do it. If I unselect a podcast, or choose Don't Sync Podcasts it just removes them from the device…
Problem #2: Anytime I plugged my 3GS in and iTunes was running it would do a mini-sync, even tho I have told it (begged it) not to sync automatically. Sync in Progress would appear for all of 3 seconds, but this had the affect of semi-deleting some of my podcasts. They were still listed on my phone, but they would have lost my place where I was up to for each episode, and from there they would only stream from the start. I couldn't skip or skim through the podcast, so I'd just have to download it again.
Interestingly, to double check a couple facts for this comment, I tentatively put my new iPhone 4 into the cradle and fired up iTunes. The dreaded mini-sync I'd put up with for a year on my 3GS didn't occur. So maybe that's one issue resolved anyway.

@ JimmyC:
What other options are you looking for in podcast syncing? I'm happy with the current set up. I listen to radio shows form the UK, iTunes downloads them, puts them on my iPhone, I play them and they disappear when I've heard the entire file. I can't think of a way to improve it.
I'm hoping for an improved AppleTV, iOS 4 for iPad, a new iPad with front facing camera (more likely to be in Jan) and a hardware fix for the iPhone 4, maybe just some resin around the bezel. There has to be a reason the free bumper off expires the day off this announcement.

I think there will be loads of really cool things, but they'll come at a hidden cost.
-Facetime for iPod, but no fix for our ported # issue on iPhones. That is the Apple way after all.
-iOS 4.1, which will include the iPad but horribly break something really important on the iPhone (prox sensor maybe).
-Cancelation of the white iPhone4 project due to quality issues.
-Mobile me for free, but the features you actually want will cost a fortune.

@ JimmyC:
I don't really "do" podcasts but have you tried ticking the "sync only checked songs and videos" option and then tried unchecking the episodes you don't want synced? That way you can leave the podcast settings set to "sync all" and manually de-select the unwanted ones in your library.
