Not telling
Shortest and most vague press-release ever? Maybe. Vodafone have announced today that they will be launching iPad-specific data plans, but don’t actually spill the beans on any specifics. Hit the ‘read now’ for the ‘full’ press release that contains only marginally more information than our headline.

Vodafone NZ today announced that it will offer dedicated iPad price plans for iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G in the coming weeks. iPad allows users to connect with their apps and content in a more intimate, intuitive and fun way than ever before. Users can browse the web, read and send email, enjoy and share photos, watch HD videos, listen to music, play games, read ebooks and much more, all using iPad’s revolutionary Multi-Touch user interface. For more information about iPad please visit www.apple.com/ipad/
So… there’s not a lot to actually get excited about here, and I was hoping that today’s announcement might actually be about the iPhone 4 but, hey! Any news about Apple gear in NZ is good news, right?

Not when it comes from Vodafone (usually).

Why didn’t they just keep their trap shut until they had something positive to announce, like how much the plans will cost and the arrival date for the iPad. This is not news.

I wonder how long it took their marketing/PR teams to come up with that bad boy?

Couldnt agree with you more. They really should spend less time making announcements that they have an announcement to make soon and spend more time actually working on the pricing details to avoid them being the WORST telco for Ipad pricing to go with their WORST telcom for Iphone.

@ Dan:
Shouldn’t they have pre-announced the pre-announcement of this announcement or did I miss something?
Clearly they have nothing to do.

Lots of choice in Aust. On Thurs I went to the Syd Apple store and could choose from 3-4 providers of plans for my iPad. Ironically I went with Vodafone because their micro sim was free and 1GB cost about AUD15. It expires in 1 mths time. Bring on some choice in NZ.

I am hoping for a “July 16th” Ipad release and “July 23rd” Iphone 4..or basically just hope that they dont try and release both on the same day or worse still, that the Iphone 4 is pushed back to August as it will just be a debacle on the Apple Site if both go live (pre-orders) at the same time. Other than this announcement that we have an announcement to make, there is a distinct lack of information regarding the Ipad.

Perhaps they are trying to be like Apple and build the hype up.
Unfortunately for Vodafone; Apple’s announcements usually stack up with the hysteria
I very much doubt Vodafone’s plans will….

is it worth it to ship the iPad from the USA? I plan on getting the 16GB WiFi.

Depends on when they will be released here and how much. For early adopters it was a must, but seeing as they are due for release here this month I would wait and see what the price is now. It really depends on how badly you want one, but if you wanted one that badly surely you would already have it
. Also if you do decide to get one from the US remember to add the cost of shipping to the price.

@ Dan: I have a relative up in the USA. If the shipping is too expensive wI will just wait till she visits NZ. (She’ll bring one to me.)

Off to Hawaii next week so hopefully the NZ iPad price will come out soon so I can decide whether to get one there or not. I am picking it will still be cheaper in Hawaii than here.

They're forced to tease because they know the bottom line numbers are about as appealing as a cup of cold sick.

So I take this to mean that Vodafone will be selling the iPad along with a broadband connection plan – as with the iPhone? Or am I reading too much into it….

The stupidest part is that this announcement alone is lame (nothing in it) but in reality its even LAMER as on Friday they had twitter all abuzz saying that had an announcement to make…so it turns out that fridays announcement was in fact that today (monday) they would have an announcement to make about Ipad Pricing being announced in a few weeks!!! I wanna work for Vodafone PR as they clearly get paid per word….haha

I have been with Vodafone on and off many years go and they never change their policy to suit customers.
Some plan I was I could not change it or if I requested then they will charge me. The worse now a day the plan. Text 2000 Vodafone to Vodafone only. Hello XT is better deal that I only pay $12 and get unlimited text and I can text to any network for free.

I'm going to Melb on the 19th for a week. Taking my Ipad & will get a sim there to use.

@ Psychrn:
Voda sims are free, as are 3's (Voda has better data plans).
Optus and Testra sell sims for ipads for like $29 from memory.

I’m not sure that much will change. Goods & services are sold at the highest price the market can possibly bear (within current regulations) and Vodafone/Telecom both rely on the willingness of consumers here to pay their prices – which we’ve all done, albeit with grumbles and moans, for a long time.
I’m pretty sure the advent of a device like the iPad won’t engender a change to the status quo. Cellphones are closer to saturation point and we’re all still paying the prices for access to networks.
