XT Voicemail Fix on V3 or Micro SIM
Those of you that have got your iPhone 4 today and have decided to take it across to Telecom maybe wondering why your voicemail button isn’t working even though you have a V3 SIM or a MicroSIM.
Hit the read more to see what you need to do (it’s easy by the way)
So for those that don’t know this, if you have an iPhone 4 or you’re running an iPhone on iOS4 and are using it on XT your voicemail button likely doesn’t work. There is an easy fix for this, but it does require you to have a V3 SIM or a Micro SIM.
When iOS 4 first came out and XT only had V2 SIMs you had to dial the number or save it as a favourite. Well now on their V3 and Micro SIMs you can get the voicemail button working.

Voicemail Fix
You need to go back to the old trick of dialling *5005*86*083210# then hitting send. The screen will very briefly flash and you are done. This has now stored the number on the SIM card and next time you go to use the voicemail button it will now work.
Full Steps:
Click on your iPhone’s phone button
Then click on the Keypad tab
You need to then add the following code: *5005*86*083210#
After entering the code you tap call
This results in the code being set
Thats all, tap now on the voicemail button and it should automatically call your usual voicemail service.
Hope this clears it up for all those that have emailed us about it.

You shouldn’t have to do this with an xt microsim or v3 sim. Worked for me out of the box. You do need a new v3.

@ acsonline: There are users (including myself) who have a new V3 SIM and it did not work out-of-the-box. This info is there for users where it doesn’t work. For those that it does work out-of-the-box, great.
This didn't work for me on my 3GS 16Gb with V3 sim. Is there something else I have to do?

Don't you just love it when something comes together. Tried *5005*86*202# on my 2degrees and first time it didn't work. Tried a second time and it did. Way to go guys!

Anyone notice this fix dissapearad after the recent iOS upgrade? I was unable to re-implement it. After entering the *5005*86*202# code and hitting call the screen just flashes but voicemail button still does nothing. Have tried a few times.. my sim card is a cut V1 card so that might be why!

@ jdmwellington:
Two things: what you’re trying to do won’t work on a V1 card, and *5005*86*202# would be the code for 2degrees voicemail, but since you’re talking about a V1 card I assume you’re on XT.
If you’re with Telecom, go to a Telecom store and get a new SIM card (it will be a V3), and then use the correct code for Telecom: *5005*86*083210#.
If you are with 2degrees then you’re doing something wrong… these codes still work in iOS 4.x.

Probably pay to use the *5005*86*006483210# number (just so it works when people are overseas and roaming?). Just a thought.

I have tried this method and can’t get it to work. I’m with TelstraClear, and whenever I tap Voicemail I get a recorded message saying that the number I have called is not currently active or is invalid (Not a visual message). I have followed the *5005* instructions, and the screen flashes as promised, but no matter what number I use, I get the same recorded message.
I have successfully used 0298500500 as a contact, but *5005*86*0298500500# doesn’t work. I’ve also tried *5005*86*083210# to no avail. Any ideas?
P.S. I’m using an iphone 4 with 4.2.1

@ Peter McC: I googled “telstraclear iphone voicemail settings” for you and the very first result has the answer. http://tinyurl.com/35bch52

Thanks Steve. But I would love to know why the *5005* method doesn’t work.

Telstra says that all nz iphone 4s have the vodafone voicemail number hard-coded into the device. Apple tells me that nothing is hard-coded, and that Telstraclear is using all the Vodafone setting on its simcard.
Surely a carrier can put the appropriate settings on the simcard before sending out to the customer?!?!

I am on the xt network with the V# sim and I have tried the number to dial in but it still does not work for me!! Any other suggestions??
Would reseting to factory help??

@ RichardJ: Do you have a version 3 SIM card? No V3 SIM card means no voicemail button. If its a Telecom supplied MicroSIM (not a cut down one) then it should be good.

@ AndrewNZ:Yeah I phoned Telecom they tell me it is a V3 so I have tried to phone the number the screen flashes but the button still doesn’t work! This is for an iPhone 3GS not iPhone4

@ RichardJ: A V1 or V2 SIM updated to V3 is NOT the same as a V3 sim. There is a field missing in the older SIM cards and an update does not fix it. See this post
http://www.iphonewzealand.co.nz/2010/all/telecom-to-fix-sim-cards-for-voicemail-via-over-the-air-update/
Compare your SIM card to the ones in the post If it’s not V3 then you need to visit a store for a replacement SIM (there might be a cost), or put up with it not working.
If they tell you the card has been updated to V3, tell them “Unless something has changed, an updated SIM does not provide the fields the iPhone requires for the voice button to work, only a genuine V3 SIM provides these fields”.
Where do you live, perhaps someone here can advise you of a helpful store.

@ AndrewNZ: Mate you are a LEGEND!! That is wxcatly what my problem is it is a V1 sim it had been updated over air so I need to get an actual V3!! as I tried my girlfriends who has a V3 and it worked perfectly!!
