WelliBUS app creator aims for real-time information via crowd-sourcing

Waiting, waiting, waiting

tmro, the cats behind Wellington bus timetable app WelliBUS are seeking feedback on what could potentially be a very cool solution to adding real-time information to the app. Founder Nick Parfene tells us that users of the app, of which there are around 4,000, are very vocal about their desire to see not just when the bus is scheduled to turn up but when it is actually going to turn up. It’s a need we can all identify with… so what’s the solution?

Christchurch bus users already have this luxury through Orsome’s Metroinfo app but the key difference is that the bus operator in Christchurch has an API (of sorts) for passing this information to Orsome’s servers, but Wellington’s bus operators have no such system in place and won’t have any time soon. tmro’s proposed solution is to crowd-source this information by having users of the app send information back to it, letting the apps back-end systems know when buses have turned up so that it can then pass that info on to other users. Check out the blog post, and if you’re a Wellington bus rider be sure to get involved and leave your feedback. People power!
