WWDC 2010 Coverage
With Apple’s annual Worldwide Developers Conference only hours away, we highlight what to expect from the technology giant and some possible surprises to be had.
Back in April we relayed reports of popular technology blog Gizmodo getting their hands on what appeared to be a fourth-generation iPhone, which had been lost in a bar by an Apple engineer and purchased by the blog for US$5000. After it was torn apart and shown to the world, it was widely believed to be the real deal – beliefs which were proven true when Apple requested their stolen property be returned. Even though Apple’s surprise seems to have been spoiled, they have remained tight-lipped on the issue, apart from Steve Job stating in an interview that he won’t let what happened slide.
It is widely believed that this iPhone will be announced at the WWDC keynote on Monday (Tuesday 5am NZT), following the same pattern as all previous iPhone releases. However, Apple have never had such a problem with a lost prototype, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out. I’m sure there will be some awkward questions at the end for Mr Jobs!
The entire conference is based around the iPhone, but specifically iPhone OS 4.0 and the App Store. As seen on Adam Jackson’s flickr account, Apple have hung multiple banners about Apps with various milestones advertised. They obviously like to boast the tremendous success of the App Store… but what else could it mean? Will they introduce new development tools which we haven’t seen before? Will there be any new aspects of the new iPhone OS 4 released? There haven’t been any major changes in the SDK releases to developers which indicates that Apple may be saving up the best stuff for the keynote.
The Mac appears to be put on the back burner for WWDC 10, however it is possible that Apple may release a new Mac Pro accompanied by 27″ Displays. The last revision of the Mac Pro was March 2009 so the product line is due for a refresh.
It has been rumored that as part of Apple’s push for Cloud-based computing services, MobileMe may be made free to the general public at WWDC — or at least some version of it. Apple also revealed earlier this week that they are working on some service for wirelessly syncing the iPhone, which has the potential to be announced at the conference.
At this stage everything is just speculation, and we won’t know for sure until the keynote.
iPhonewzealand will be live blogging the event from 5am on Tuesday so please ensure you bookmark page 2 of this post. The page will auto-refresh every 30 seconds for you. Following and during the conference we will also have detailed summary posts available in the main blog.

@ Plamsaglows:
iLife updates are usually at the start of the year, I’d love it if there was and iLife update tomorrow but I think they will be skipping a year with iLife, they have done this once before. Anyhow my alarm is set 4:45 am!

@ Plamsaglows: I wouldn't complain about a MBP price drop! I wonder if they've started that free iPod or students deal yet..
