Fix Your iOS5 APN Issues Via Wi-Fi

iOS 5 available now! .. but is your data?

By now most of you with iOS devices will have managed to update to the new version and will be enjoying it without issue. However some of you are experiencing the APN horror story.

Fear not there is a way to fix it!

Update: MMS and mobile data switch

You will need an active Wi-Fi connection for this.

Open Mobile Safari and point it to

www.unlockit.co.nz <– Click if on iOS

APN Changer Home

Hit the Custom APN link

APN Changer Root Menu

APN Changer Menu

Select your carrier from the drop down menu

NZ Carrier Options - There are many global carriers too

and hit “Create Profile” then Hit “Install”

Accept The Carrier Certificate

Voila! and just to prove it actually works the next photo is taken after I applied it to my iPad2 running iOS5

It's Alive! - Except I don't have data or credit.. DOH!

and there we have it, a fully working 3G iPad 2.

Thanks and credit to Craig Whitmore who created this program and is the Admin over at unlockit.co.nz. This man has saved many people.

Update (Dan): I’d just like to add to this… Firstly some background. Lets say you are on prepay (on your iPhone) and you don’t want to waste your balance on mobile data. You should be able to go into “Settings >> Network”, turn off mobile data and stop this. Whilst it may not stop all data charges it should stop most of it. For some reason (and I’ve only tested this on XT) it doesn’t work as it should and instead of just turning off mobile data it also stops you from sending picture messages. But fear not unlockit.co.nz can come to the rescue again.
Using a method similar to above you can change the main APN (which enables you to use mobile data) but keep the MMS APN still active. Follow the steps below and you will be good to go.

1. On your iPhone go to unlockit.co.nz
2. Click ‘continue >> custom APN’
3. Create a profile for 2degrees and install it.
(note: you should leave the mobile data switch under “Settings >> Network” on)

As I said this will change the APN for mobile data to the 2degrees one but will leave the other APN’s alone. Once you have done that everything else should as work as normal with the exception of mobile data.

I don’t know why the other method (switching off mobile data) doesn’t work, and I am not sure how this will affect your data usage but it should stop most of it.

Of course the only pain is when you want to use mobile data you have to delete the config file it installs and then re add it via the method above to disable it again. Not hard to do but a pain none the less.

What are actually the APN settings for?

Is this just a 2Degrees issue on the iPad? My iPad 2 has access to the normal APN settings section running ios5 with XT. The iPhone doesn’t but wasn’t aware it affected iPads as well?

Hi guys – has anyone had any luck with this after iOS5 has been fully released? I’ve got a telecom SIM which now can’t even get text messages after the update – mobile browsing now works but text messaging is completely non functional
    Any ideas? Cheers

As shown in my photos I used this method on iOS5 last night

Looks like it decided to play silly buggers in town – didn’t work at Wynyard Qrtr, but worked once I left the area.

This is fine if you’re happy to have that profile but I have a work profile installed that gives me access to work internet etc. I couldn’t install the unlockit profile but the SIM swap solution worked fine. Get a Vf or 2deg SIM, bring up the right screen, swap in the Telecom Sim, no worries.

I used to have similar issues and found that the best solution was to reboot the iPad. Other than that try adding an iCloud account in the mail account setting page

    Hi guys,

I’m on VF prepay and I don’t use celluar data, just wifi. I had a problem once I updated my iphone 3GS to ios5 where I used to have a fake APN (www.m2.net.nz) where data wouldn’t be used and I won’t get charged, but I could still have my cellular data on so I can receive PXTs.

It seems that once I have updated to ios5, even if I have input a fake APN (which was a URL set up by VF) I am still getting charged with random celluar data usage. I tried going to unlockit.co.nz to set up a fake APN, but the site said because ios4 onwards, we can just disable celluar data altogether, it is no longer needed. – Anychance there’s another way around this?
