How to save upto 25% off OS X Lion

We like these maths

If you’ve got a Mac and you’re planning on buying OS X Lion when it comes out, there’s a quick and easy way to save upto 25% off that purchase. Lion will be sold via the Mac App Store which is actually the same account (and therefore the same funds) as your iTunes account. To save, all you need to do is take advantage of any sales or special offers on iTunes gift cards between now and the launch of Lion. The biggest discount we’ve seen is 25% which is just what Harvey Norman happen to have off this very weekend – they are selling two $20 cards for $30. Lion will sell in NZ for $38.99 which is already a steal for a whole new OS, but with a further 25% it’s daylight robbery so get into it.

I rang ahead, and both Whitcoulls and Harvey Norman should have them on sale in Auckland. The sale ends on the 16th at Harvey Norman and Whitcoulls said it is for “a couple of weeks”.

Oh, well spotted! Can anyone confirm whether or not iTunes gift cards work for the Mac App Store as well? To me it makes sense that they would, providing you’re using the same account, but has anyone had experience to confirm this?

Never mind – found it myself. From the Mac App Store FAQs (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4461):

Can I use an iTunes Gift Card or Apple Store Gift Card to make purchases on the Mac App Store?

iTunes Gift Cards can be used to make purchases from the Mac App Store.
Apple Store Gift Cards are redeemable in Apple retail stores, and may not be used on the Mac App Store.

Got mine from harvey norman Timaru after some browsing through their catalog. The logo on the store catalogs $20 gift cards is different to that pictured above.
I wonder If enough were purchased you could save $250ish on an ipad hmmmm ?

    @ Gen:

Nope, the cards can only be used in the App Stores and iTunes. They can’t be used to purchase items from Apple’s online product store. They have different gift cards for that which I have never seen on sale.

Thanks for the heads-up. Got a couple of cards at Whitcoulls Westfield Mall in Riccarton Christchurch.

How does one know when these opportunities come along? Do you just have to be lucky and see them as you are browsing those stores?

    @ nz_Ark:
Yup just keep your eye out in the junk mail. Most weekends at least one retailer seems to have a special offer on them.

  14. Ivan says:

Thanks for the tip – got a couple from Whitcoulls, Hornby Mall.

It was a little confusing as they have iTunes cards (as pictured above) and AppStore cards. The woman behind the counter said one was for music and the other for Apps but reading the back of them both cards do both so I guess it is just a marketting gimmick.

    @ Ivan:
Yup it’s purely a marketing thing, in case some people see iTunes vouchers and think they can’t buy apps with them and vice versa.

  16. SeattleC says:

Great idea Steve, the same applies in UK where boots have £25 cards for £20 right now… Right, I am off out to grab a few

Just managed to pick up a couple of cards from Whitcoulls on Queen St, Auckland. The staff there kindly checked the fine print and told me that the sale goes until the 18th.

Mate of mine has pointed out the following that is on the Apple web site. Can some shed some light on this for me:

Q: Can I use an iTunes Gift Card or Apple Store Gift Card to make purchases on the Mac App Store?
A: iTunes Gift Cards can be used to make purchases from the Mac App Store. Apple Store Gift Cards are redeemable in Apple retail stores, and may not be used on the Mac App Store.

Pretty self explanatory, iTunes Gift Cards (which is what’s on sale at the moment and being discussed in this Blog) can be used in the Mac App Store but Apple Store Gift Cards (Apple Store being where you buy hardware, no retail stores in NZ – only online store) are not.

I didn’t see any Apple Store Gift Cards at Whitcoulls when I picked up my iTunes Gift Cards.
