Vodafone breaks the silence, announces pricing and midnight launch

Also open at midnight

Vodafone have finally broken their silence on the iPhone 4S and have this afternoon announced handset pricing, subsidies, plans, and confirmed that they, too, will be hosting a midnight launch at the following stores: Queen St, Auckland; Lambton Quay, Wellington; George St, Dunedin; and Riccarton Mall, Christchurch. It will then be available in all Vodafone retail stores from 9:00am. The handset-only price is $1049, but subsidies and contracts appear  (with just a cursory glance) to be similar to Telecom’s offerings. Keep reading for the press release and full pricing details.

Vodafone iPhone 4S pricing

AUCKLAND – November 10, 2011 – Vodafone today announced it will offer iPhone 4S to customers in New Zealand beginning Friday, November 11. iPhone 4S will be available starting at $49 for the 16GB model, $199 for the 32GB model and $349 for the 64GB model with a new two-year contract in Vodafone retail stores and online at vodafone.co.nz/iphone. Vodafone is also offering iPhone 4 8GB for $0 with a new two-year contract.

iPhone 4S is the most amazing iPhone yet, packed with incredible new features including Apple’s dual-core A5 chip for blazing fast performance and stunning graphics; an all new camera with advanced optics and full 1080p HD resolution video recording. With the launch of iPhone 4S also comes the launch of iOS 5, the world’s most advanced mobile operating system with over 200 new features; and iCloud, a breakthrough set of free cloud services that work with your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac or PC to automatically and wirelessly store your content in iCloud and push it to all your devices.

“iPhone has really changed the way customers use and interact with their phones, the latest generation is going to change that again,” said Grant Hopkins, director of sales at Vodafone New Zealand. “Customers will undoubtedly love surfing the web, enjoying their social media and texting their friends with iPhone 4S on our high-speed, powerful network.

“We think customers are going to love the value we are offering on iPhone – especially given how much Kiwis love to call and TXT. And we have no charge for calls to voicemail. Already anyone who signs up for a Vodafone Smart Plan contract gets an extra 1GB of data every month for six months.”

iPhone 4S will be available at selected Vodafone stores and online from 12.01 am on Friday, November 11. These stores include Queen St, Auckland; Lambton Quay, Wellington; George St, Dunedin; and Riccarton Mall, Christchurch. It will be available in all Vodafone retail stores from 9:00am.

So: now that you know what both carriers are going to be offering and where, who will you pick?

Which *official* carrier are you choosing for your iPhone?

    Vodafone have the same ol’ plans and prices for the original iPhone 4 prices back last July, but also, I saw this;

    * No Plan Transfers: From 11 November 2011 any customer buying an iPhone on a Smart plan contract for 24 months will not be able to transfer plans within the 24 month term.

    They caught on to the 6 month flaw
    They also sent me this on Twitter;

    @danbakes Queen St, Auckland; Lambton Quay, Wellington; George St, Dunedin; and Riccarton Mall, Christchurch. will be, all others @ 9am ^JM

    If one of them actually offered Visual Voicemail, which Vodafone was supposed to do years ago, it’d be a no brainer for me.

    Would they have done anything if Telecom hadn’t shamed them into it ?

    I fail to see what’s ‘smart’ about a paying $150 for a smart plan, with 500MB data……..

    Agree with sinister. I had VF sales call trying to get me off the Smart3 $80 plan to one of the new ones listed above. In summary, I’d get the same text allowance (2500), more than double mins (120 to 300) but considerably less data (3GB to 250MB) for an extra $5 month.

    Um HELLO. Smartphone users need more data allowances in their plans not more text/calls.
    Is there anybody there that studies customer trends or do any form of research? I guess not.

    Much more data we will need with iCloud. Who needs 2,500 texts a month.

    Come on 2 Degrees it’s your turn to show some balls and increase our data to at least 500MB a month. 1gig would be better.

    Will be the last time I line up at Vodafone, yes they were giving out free pizza and hot drinks, but I was number 34 in Christchurch and they had run out of 64GB. I didn’t walk out of store til 1:30am. They had some serious efficiency issues going on, and decided they would still charge a cheeky $30 for a MicroSIM! Looking forward to switching to XT in February, shame I didn’t have the patience to get a 64GB in a few days

    Everyone happy with their 4S? :-) :-) I know I am!!! Apart from an issue affecting a few people, which is the volume up button seems to be playing up and turning volume all the way up randomly… will get it replaced.

    Vodafone. Come on. You’re going to loose one more Customer if you’re still playing games with me.
    Vodafone resign me on a new 24months term agreeing to waive my fees but slapped on a $150 fees on my phone bil..
    Gees that’s not it, after re signing me with a new contract, they start charging me iPhone plan but told me they run out of iPhone 4S. I know for the fact there are plenty of stocks but why are they being such difficult. Should I cancel it and go to telecom?
